Mathematics

Family fun with Maths

- There are many board games that you may have at home which encourage development in Math. These include: Yahztee (basic addition), Connect Four (problem-solving, reasoning and developing strategies), puzzles (spatial awareness), Card games (have players flip cards to create the largest/smallest number), Monopoly (money), and Battleship (coordinates).

- Use an egg carton as a counting tool to practice addition and subtraction skills up to 10. Simply place an  object in the empty slots to count to/from 10.

- Bake with your child. Read instructions on the back of the box or from a cook book and allow your child to measure the ingredients.

- You can develop a better understanding of fractions by discussing equal parts with your child. Any time you bake, it is an opportunity for them to discuss fractions. How much of the apple crumble is left?

Logic puzzle

You are about to leave for holiday, but you forgot socks! You race back to your room, but the power is off so you can't see sock colours.

Never mind, because you remember that in your drawer there are ten pairs of green socks, ten pairs of black socks, and eleven pairs of blue socks, but they are all mixed up.

How many of your socks do you need to take before you can be sure to have at least one matching pair?
