Year 9 ADVANCE

Year 9 ADVANCE YMCA Camp

The first Year 9 ADVANCE camp was held at the Lady Northcote Recreational and Leadership Camp at Bacchus Marsh. The intrepid students accompanied by Ms Mortimer and Mr Winduss were challenged to “get out of their comfort zone” by exhilarating activities run by the YMCA Outdoor Education Instructors. The camp highlight – “the young people” - who were courageous and supporting, encouraging and caring for their friends.

This camp had countless positive aspects such as the activities, team building games, cabins and learning about everyone in general. The activities included the Giant Swing, High Ropes, the Survivor Challenge, Initiatives, Mission Impossible and the Sports Session. Being around my encouraging peers helped me to try my best in all of the activities. … Some things I found interesting at camp were our nightly games of mafia and spoons, ambush, 40/40 home-base and star gazing. Although these activities didn’t require much of an adventurous side, it challenged our minds and how we input strategy into games. These games were a lot of fun and pulled the whole class closer together as a team.   Tiffani TRAN (9A)

The Year 9 ADVANCE Camp of 2018 was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life, not only because I become friends with the entire class and made a number of new friendships that I will cherish forever, but because I was also able to take part in many new unforgettable activities which I never dreamed I would be able to do, and overall I had so much fun!   Cindy LE (9A)

Wow, what an amazing experience! I felt like those were the longest, craziest and exciting days I have ever encountered whilst having my stay at a campsite. I had an amazing opportunity to bond with all the people in my advance class, it was also a great opportunity for us to be stress free from school!   Sonya PHAM (9C)

This camp was unforgettable. You got to build qualities that can be put into your life, like leadership, being social, having courage and facing fears.   Vincent PHAN (9I)

My favourite activity was the “Mission Impossible” team activity because the challenges brought the team closer together and it was my favourite because team AKA WE LIKE TO PART won! … Another highlight was the boys dancing down the corridor to wake up the girls in the morning.   Alan QUACH (9I)

Waking up to my peers dancing in the hallway trying to get us up wasn't as bad as it seemed. The whole time I dreaded the high ropes and in the end that was the thing that had the most impact on me, but with the encouragement of my peers, it made the whole experience so much better and easier and not as life-threatening as it looked.   Anna MAJSTOROVIC (9D)

On my first turn on the giant swing, I unfortunately couldn’t make it up to the highest point, but in my second attempt I realised that it wasn’t as bad as I had thought so I swallowed my fears and ascended up to 21 metres off the ground! … One of the highlights of this camp was definitely the star gazing. The twinkling and dazzling little lights were so beautiful it couldn't be described with just words.   Iris WEN (9D)

The High Ropes were completely different to the giant swing. For the giant swing, the only thing you have to do is pull a rope and the swing does the rest but for the high ropes, you have to do the work yourself. I did the third course aka the Tarzan swing and the fifth course aka the playpen or something along those lines. It was a great experience and probably the best activity at camp.   Daniela NESVADBA (9A)

I really liked how we just all got along, I loved playing mafia with everyone because it was hilarious. Playing spoons was also really fun and building a hut with Anna and Ngoc was amazing. I had never done this before so I'm glad I got the chance - even though it was really hot and frustrating, we got the job done and we were proud of our achievement.   Jolanta Jodko (9H)

It was a good feeling when everyone had to work as a team to complete the initiatives course. Together we were able to develop vital team building skills while solving all the puzzles and challenges that were thrown our way. We also managed to make a new record of 33 seconds while balancing on the huge seesaw, which I’m sure we are all very proud of. Emily THOMPSON (9A)

Star-gazing was one of the most beautiful moments the whole class had shared together. While we were wrapping up our night game “Ambush’” with all torches on, we were told to turn off our lights and look up into the sky. Within that split second, it was a moment of silence through the beauty of nature that everyone one of us had indulged. The stars were a rare, incredible sight.   Janet HUYNH (9H)

The main purpose of this camp was to build new relationships and form strong bonds with each other, which is exactly what we all did. ‘Having friends encourages the development of qualities such as respect, trust, tolerance, good communication skills and honesty.’   Cindy DANG (9G)
