Year 2 Persuasive Writing

This term Year 2 have been learning how to write persuasively! We have learnt that rhetorical questions and impact words help to persuade our audience! We have written letters to Mrs O'Neill persuading her that we need a longer lunchtime and Mrs Jagers persuading her that we need to ban plastic straws and plastic bags at St Philomena's. Last week we wrote letters to persuade the Moree Bakehouse to choose our doughnut flavour to have in their bakery. We even got to read our persuasive writing to Mr and Mrs Gobbert in person and they bought some amazing doughnuts to share with us!! Thank you so much Moree Bakehouse!!

Primary Public Speaking Years 3-6

Congratulations to Annika Maslin and George Tighe, winner and runner-up in the Year 3 section of our annual Public Speaking competition. Lucy Chaplin, Alex Reardon and Flo Finlayson presented well and are also to be commended for their outstanding efforts to reach the finals.

Rose Kirkby and Flo Crowe were crowned winner and runner-up in the Year 4 section. Sylvia Osborn, Charlotte Davison, Olivia Turner and Charlotte Ball made up the all girl finalists that presented their speeches last Thursday to  a large crowd of students, teachers, parents, friends and judges.

Angus Manchee and Lachlan Maslin entertained the crowd with their outstanding public speaking skills to become the Year 5 winner and runner-up. Archie Crawford, Gilbert Tighe, Tom Barnes and Lily Haddad all spoke extremely well and should be very proud to have become the Year 5 finalists.

Albert Osborn and Angus Reardon both presented moral speeches that resonated with many in the audience to become Year 6 winner and runner-up. Lucy McDonald, Jaz Hunter, Bella Fernance and Bronte Davison made up the top six public speakers of  Year 6 2018.

Many thanks to Andrew O'Neill and Lila Fisher for volunteering their time and taking on the hard task of judging the finals for each grade.

Real Talk Australia

Real Talk is coming to St Philomena's School in November, running sessions for students in years 4, 6, 7 and 9.

Real Talk Australia is an organisation that is all about getting REAL on the topics of sex, relationships and personal identity. Based on Catholic Christian values, Real Talk provides up-to-date resources, presentations and programs that help young people to understand God’s amazing plan for love and life.

It is important for young people to know that they are of great value, that they have a purpose and also for them to have an understanding of the topics of relationships and sex. Young people today receive countless mixed messages about these topics, and can be unaware or confused about the precious gift they hold. (Cf: Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1632; Sacred Congregations for Catholic Education, 1997, 18).

We appreciate the importance of the role of parents in the education of their children. Our aim is to complement and not replace, the present instruction of your children. (Cf: Familiaris Consortio, 37)

Real Talk’s Love and Life Seminars are an opportunity for young people to hear from trained outside presenters about these topics. Real Talk presents this topic in a fun, interactive and contemporary way whilst being real and honest with the students. We seek to encourage and empower students to make positive choices that show respect for others and for themselves.

Parents of students in year 4 and 6 are invited to, and strongly encouraged to attend,  a parent information session on Wednesday 7th November in the Stage 3 Learning Space from 6pm - 7:30pm.
