Food Technology
The year 7/8’s have been learning about making healthy food choices. They have created their own healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Students have been practicing their basic kitchen skills (such as chopping, grating, peeling and spreading). Everyone has been getting their hands wet learning how to do the dishes. The new year 7 students have settled in very well to their new subject. They are now learning about “Eating Your Colours” where we focus on the different nutrition in different coloured fruits and vegetables.
We would like to make a special mention to the students of SMC who made healthy fruit smoothies for parents for Education Week (Healthy Mind, Healthy Bodies). They also make food for the breakfast club each week using the leftover fruit and breads. Well done!
It has been a creative year so far in the kitchen with the year 9/10 elective “Cook Your Style”. We have made some amazing food (such as kebabs, mars bar cupcakes, sausage rolls, coconut rice and stir fry) while the students extend their skills and become more independent in the kitchen.
The “Kitchen Garden” elective with the year 11/12’s has produced an excellent harvest from the garden this term. We have had an overload of tomatoes, zucchinis and beans. The chickens have also provided eggs for us to use too. We have made some delicious zucchini chips, garden dips and bread, pickled zucchini and dried tomatoes. We have also managed to sell produce to staff to raise money for our charity – Oxfam.
The “Meal Deal” elective with the year 11/12’s has been a big hit amongst staff. We have used a lot of produce from the garden to make some amazing meals and have raised even more funds for Oxfam.

Another successful Book Fair was held in the Bundoora Campus library. From the pictures it is evident that our students enjoyed the opportunity to look at the great selection of books on display at the Book Fair. It was also an opportunity for our older students to spend time in the library relaxing and sharing the experience with their class mates. Thank you to all those who supported this year’s Book Fair.
