Secondary 11-12

VCAL CANTEEN

Last week on Thursday SHJ VCAL students organised and ran the Athletics Day for the years 7–12 students. The Canteen VCAL group was responsible for the free hamburger for student and staff lunches that day.

There was a lot of planning, calculating amounts and costs, working out ingredients, buying ingredients, making and freezing hamburgers, trialling a run-through of hamburgers and then of course, the huge logistical operation of making 350 hamburgers in a few hours. The burgers were made to order and our students also made and delivered the order forms. We made burgers with a choice of three different sauces and a variety of extras. Students later wrote reflective pieces about the day and discussed our feedback forms, so we can improve our systems for the next time we do something like this. This project covered many VCAL Personal Development and some Literacy and Numeracy outcomes.

Overall, the whole experience was great, tiring and somewhat stressful, but a real-life work situation. We had to use many skills and plenty of teamwork. We were all proud to have been part of the day! Congratulations to all the students involved.

Gala Night

The year 11/12 staff and students have worked hard this semester.  Staff and students will be setting up a showcase from each classroom displaying their understanding of ‘community connections’.  Throughout semester 1, students have been exploring various aspects of community connectedness, including: sport and leisure, accessibility, services and directories.  Students have engaged with a number of organisations, local places and venues, and now wish to demonstrate what they have learned through a display and will end with a formal presentation from each class commencing at 7:15pm.

Year 11/12 will be hosting a Community Connections Gala Night on Tuesday 20th June from 6pm to 8pm.  This special event will be held in the Transition Building.  This evening also includes a raffle, free BBQ and coffee and tea with muffins.

This is a night not to be missed!  We from year 11/12, look forward to seeing you on the night.

Athletics Day

Throughout the semester SHJ have been planning and organising our school Athletics Day.

Thursday 25th May was the big day and it was a great success. All students from Secondary 7/8 through to 11/12 had a fantastic day. There was a great display of teamwork and encouragement throughout the day. The overall winners for the day were SRM, SMP and SNK who will enjoy a pizza day this Friday.

The last 2 sessions of the day was a disco, which was a lot of fun with all students having a dance and a laugh.

Well done to all the students in SHJ for all your hard work throughout the semester.

SSJ- Coffee Monday is a new initiative that is being developed this term in SSJ.  It is a coffee delivery service for staff that operates one day a week and is run like a business by the students with the support of the teachers. Students are doing a great job and gaining more and more orders each week.

Students are learning about the importance of organisation, reliability, punctuality, communication and working as part of a team. Working on this project involves the students participating in the decision-making process, allocating duties and delegating when someone is away.  As well the responsibility of a budget, they are also learning money handling and food safety skills.  Students also have the responsibility for stocktaking, preparing staff delivery orders and organising the settling of accounts.  This has been a fun activity and a great opportunity to learn new skills and develop confidence, whilst working in a team in a real world situation.

This term on Wednesdays, SSJ has been visiting Aces Northern/St Johns of God as part of their Post-School Connections program. Our students have enjoyed participating in a variety of activities, including jam making, ceramics and gardening. It is exciting for our class to use public transport and develop the necessary skills to navigate the community. The real highlight, though, is going to Greensborough Plaza for lunch, where SSJ learn how to order their own lunch and use money correctly.

STC- Last week the students in STC spent the week researching Nursing Homes and retirement villages.  As a class we then went on an excursion to the Baptcare Strathallan Nursing Home in Watsonia.  We spent over half an hour there; interviewing one of the workers and doing a tour.

This week the students will listen to the recorded interview, go through all of their research, then using the Concord Radio Station, will write, record and edit an advertisement for radio for the nursing home.

Next week the class will visit Open House in Macleod.  Other places we have visited and made radio ads for include; the RSPCA, the RSL, Beyond Blue, the CFA and the Royal Children’s Hospital.
