Secondary 7-8

SKH have had a great term because we have been learning about interesting things such as the human body systems; we are excited to go to the Discovery Centre to enhance our learning. We had a brain food lunch to celebrate our first integrated unit; we ate lamb souvlaki, lettuce, tomato, cheese and onion wraps and also had fruit salad with yoghurt. It was delicious and we hope to have more special lunches. We had a fun sports day organised by some year 11/12 students. The activities show cased all our sport skills.  We had hamburgers for lunch and a disco in the afternoon in the gym; everyone thought it was an awesome day. We have started a new tradition of switching teachers for reading each term. We think this is good because we experience different teaching styles. We are happy that the Magpies, Hawks and Kangas are finally winning some games!

SEO have been enjoying working hard throughout term 2. It has been a very eventful term with camp at the beginning then Education Week and Athletics Day. We really enjoyed the Athletics Day, getting to participate in such fun activities like the; relay race, soccer goal, target throw, obstacle course and basketball throw game. All very engaging and well planned activities that our year 12’s organised which they can be commended for. The day didn’t stop there, we were treated to delicious burgers for lunch followed by a disco to finish up the day. Students really loved the disco and enjoyed getting dressed up into their own styles before busting out some moves on the dance floor in the gym. What a fantastic way to end a fun packed day!

SRM and SSO thoroughly enjoyed Education Week as they got to participate in lots of different activities. The topic of Healthy Mind, Healthy body has tied in well with the students learning for their integrated unit on Human Body Systems. Each day the students started the morning with a walk around the school to get their minds and bodies moving. Thursday was by far the student’s favourite day as they loved participating in Athletics Day ran by the year 11 and 12 students. There were a lot of different stations where the students were challenged and had time trials; it was great to see each student actively participate with a smile on their face. The highlight of the day was a free hamburger, which were made to perfection! On Friday the students were very excited to have their parents spend the morning in our classrooms, the parents kindly made fruit platters for the students to enjoy! Students then worked on their Healthy Mind, Healthy Body activity where they demonstrated the differences between healthy and unhealthy food.

SLB have had a busy start to term 2, with the Secondary Spectacular High School Musical in full swing! We are getting very excited as the performance creeps closer and are rehearsing regularly. In our Integrated Unit we have been exploring Human Body Systems, which we are finding very interesting. We are enjoying discovering fascinating new facts! Secondary 7 and 8 were lucky to be involved in Athletics Day that was organised by the year 12’s. It was a fun morning, where we participated in a round robin, followed by a delicious burger lunch. Over the last 4 weeks we have focused on informative writing, putting together wonderful presentations. We are excited and nervous about presenting our PowerPoint presentations to our teachers and peers! In Maths, we are focusing on subtraction and about to start location. We have recently welcomed two new students to SLB, Sam and Jessie, who are both fitting in nicely. We can’t believe that we’re half way through the year already!

SFC and SMC students were out and about in the community a lot this term. We have been looking at road safety, community safety and learning how to use public transport correctly. The two classes have been practicing where to cross roads and streets by using pedestrian crossings and using the Stop, Look, Listen and Think steps. All of the students have been looking at the different signs in the community and what they mean. These sign have included, but are not limited to, exit signs, pedestrian crossings, information boards, escalators, elevators and first aid. We have been travelling to Greensborough Plaza and Northland Shopping Centre and using public transport to get there. While walking to different bus stops, we have been looking for traffic in driveways and crossing streets without pedestrian crossings. The students have been using their own Myki cards to touch on and off, they have also started to manage their own Myki card balance.

SSD students have been working really hard this term learning all about their bodies and how they work. We have learnt about the different body systems and how they all help to keep us active and healthy. Students have measured their pulse and breathing rates, and compared the two systems. We have participated in experiments to see how we can make our bodies systems go fast or slow. We ran to speed them up and lay really still to slow them down. Students have also enjoyed learning about cyber safety and how to use social media responsibly. They have used this knowledge to come up with their own set of guidelines on how to safely use social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. A great start to the year by the SSD classroom, keep it up guys, well done.

CONCORD SECONDARY 7/8 SPECTACULAR IS HERE AGAIN!

This year our annual Spectacular features ninety year 7/8 students at Concord School performing ‘High School Musical’. Laura Brown, our incredible choreographer and dance instructor from the Australian School of Performing Arts has been weaving her magic with the students since March. Several students have taken on acting roles and with Vera Mitchell’s skilful guidance, the talented cast have steadily improved their stage performance. Classes have also practised their dances weekly and are extremely excited about performing in front of school students, family and friends. Audiences will have a great opportunity to feast their eyes on some stunning costuming and special effects orchestrated by Karen Hickling and her dynamic backstage crew.
