Principal's Report

Information Night 26th April and Open Day 27th April

Thank you to our Public Relations Captain Naomi Miller who organised one of our most successful Open Days ever! Naomi ensured the day focused on welcome and inclusion. Naomi was ably supported by P.R. Vice-Captain Claudia Junge in preparing the Junior Ambassadors for school tours and responding to the various questions of prospective students and parents.

At the Information Night our College Captains spoke from the heart about being an MGC student; the challenges, the opportunities, the friendships and their positive relationships with teachers. Many thanks also to Girls’ Leadership Leader, Ella McDonald, Brent Houghton and all Staff, for their work on Open Day.

Learning @ MGC

We are continuing the work on building a growth mindset to learning with every student. It is complex research but can be as simple as responding to the statement, “I can’t do maths” with “You can’t do that aspect of maths yet but you will”. Parents can also help us in this approach. Valuing the hard work and persistence rather than seeing perfection first time as the goal is essential to how students learn more from their errors than getting everything right all the time.

Learning Community Connection

On 27th April we hosted a delegation from Queensland exploring best practice in learning frameworks, student engagement and internationalizing schooling to ensure our students are true global citizens. The feedback below accurately describes our students.

“Hi Karen,

Our visit to Melbourne Girls’ College was a wonderful experience for all of us. The culture of the school will stay with us for some time. Everywhere we went the students were so well presented, engaged and enjoying themselves. The time you and some of your team spent with us was invaluable in helping us begin to shape the future direction of our schools. The resources, including the survey sent today, amounts to many hours of work from yourself and your team and I am overwhelmed with your generosity.

Thank you and all the best in 2017.                                                                                                                                        Ron Harrison, Principal, Chancellor State College”.

Rowing Presentation Night 27th April 2017

As you can see 27th April was an extremely busy day which concluded with a celebration of our rowing season. Congratulations to our Head Coach, Steph Burgess, President Shelley Anderson, Treasurer Ian Ferguson, Secretary Kristin Seymour, our great staff, coaches and most importantly our rowers. It was a privilege to honour the award recipients and all of the girls- the quiet achievers who participate, persist and love their sport.

Department of Education and Training (DET) Government Schools in Richmond and Prahran

MGC welcomes the building of two new high schools nearby. Under DET rules this means boundary changes to ensure that students are enrolled at their nearest government school. This document on our website outlines the Year 7 enrolment policy agreed with DET http://mgc.vic.edu.au/join-our-school/enrolment/enrol-to-year-7/

DET modelling indicates that even beyond 2020 all post code 3121 based girls will gain a place at the College as the MGC enrolment provision for 50% of the next closest girls shows this clear intent.

Kind Regards,

Karen Money
