2020 - What an unforgettable year

Jon Charlton, Principal

As 2020 closes on a truly unforgettable year, I am indeed grateful that our students and staff were able to return onsite and see the year out, particularly our Year 12 students. We have certainly missed seeing parents, grandparents and guardians on campus. We look forward to seeing you, hopefully not just from a distance, in the new year!

On Monday 30 Nov, we held our 2020 Celebration Night. While it was in a different format from previous years, I hope you were able to watch and celebrate our theme of ‘strength in community’; so apt. It was such a source of inspiration for me, and no doubt many others throughout this challenging year.

Celebration Night was also an opportunity to farewell our Class of 2020, of whom I am exceedingly proud. While their final year of school was not what they had imagined, I know there were opportunities for new learnings, reflection and growth, and I wish them every success with their exam results. I look forward to a proper graduation celebration in 2021!

For those of you who may not have been able to join us on Monday, you can watch the Celebration Night video here.

Significant highlights

While COVID dramatically impacted the School’s operations, I couldn’t be more pleased with the way students and staff embraced and contributed to the efficient delivery of our remote learning platform. We did indeed rise to the occasion, and feedback suggests that we did exceedingly well in limiting the negative impact on our students’ learning.

This year, to the delight of our ELC students, staff and families, we opened our new ELC playground. This, together with a new Junior School play space, completes our interactive ‘play precinct’ that runs along the Katandra Road boundary.

The newly refurbished Junior School and Administration wing is now complete and looks fantastic. Our Main Reception entry offers a contemporary and welcoming experience for our families and visitors. The new First Aid and Counselling spaces have been well received, as indeed have the upstairs classroom, breakout and conference spaces.

Our 2020 Yearbook

Today your child/ren will bring home a copy of our Yearbook - The Kilvonian. Hopefully, they will have some signatures from their teachers and classmates. We hope you enjoy reflecting on 2020.

Staffing

We farewell Mr Jordan Adams, Library and Audiovisual Technician, after six years at Kilvington. Jordan has given wonderful service to the School. We wish him all the best in his next career move.

Mr Kantesh Devadiga joins our IT team in December as our new Network and Systems Administrator. He comes from the Bridged Group where he worked as the Systems Engineer.

Next year, we welcome Mrs Christine Nolan as a Laboratory Technician. Christine has an abundance of experience working in similar roles in other independent schools, most recently St Michael’s Grammar School.

2021 School commencement

School commences on Friday 29 January for Years 7 and 12 students. There will also be a parent morning tea. Years 1 to 6 and Years 8 to 11 students commence on Monday 1 February, followed by a parent morning tea. We welcome our Prep students on Tuesday 2 February. Prep parents are welcome to stay and join us for a cuppa.

I wish you a happy, safe and peaceful festive season, and look forward to welcoming you back to Kilvington in 2021.
