Feast of St Raphael

St Raphael the Archangel whose name means “God has healed” in Hebrew may be regarded as the most ‘human’ of these angels because of the special nature of his mission. Raphael is the auxiliary of Providence, the instructor, healer and comforter of mankind. He is frequently spoken of as St Raphael and that too is correct, for the word “Saint” comes from the Latin sanctus which means “holy.” Angels, as well as human beings of extraordinary holiness, are called Saints. Archangel Raphael is one of the seven Archangels that stand before the throne of God chanting hymns of unending praise. When we pray for this help, he intercedes directly to God the Father. He is one of the three angels mentioned by name in holy scripture. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

Who are all of the archangels? The seven angels or archangels are associated with a day of the week. Michael (Sunday), Gabriel (Monday), Raphael (Tuesday), Uriel (Wednesday), Selaphiel (Thursday), Raguel or Jegudiel (Friday) and Barachiel (Saturday)

Whether it’s a life-threatening condition, a painful injury, or an annoying health issue, Archangel Raphael is able to heal it! Archangel Raphael is also known for being the Angel of Marriage, Healing, helping the Blind,Happy Meetings, Peace and Joy, and of Travel.

We read about Archangel Raphael in the book of Tobit.  Reference to Raphael is mentioned.

Tobit 12:15- “I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord.”                                                                                                    Tobit 5:11-13 “Joy be to thee always…. Be of good courage, they cure from God is at hand.”

Although St Raphael is not mentioned by name in the New Testament, many commentators, basing their conjectures on the healing significance of his name, identify him with the “Angel of the Lord” mentioned in John 5:4.

The Feast of St Raphael is celebrated on October 24th according to the traditional calendar of the Church.

Last Friday we celebrated the Feast of St Raphael as a whole school community.  We began the day by gathering together in prayer and celebrating mass lead by Fr Benneth along with some of our Senior and Foundation students. A shared lunch was had on greenland and after lunch multiage group

students participated in activities.

The purpose of this day and participating in activities was to engage children into a deeper understanding of who St Raphael is and what he is well known for. Our main focus for the day was to highlight to children that at St Raphael's School, we look up to this wonderful Archangel/Saint and walk on a faith filled journey demonstrating the qualities and values he possesses.

St Raphael was known for being the Angel of Marriage, Healing, helping the Blind, Happy Meetings, Peace and Joy, and of Travel.

I would like to thank all Staff for their creativity and efforts in making the day such a success.
