Italian Day Reflections

SAN GIUSEPPE MALVERN
ITALIANO DAY 2022
Mercoledi, 1 Giugno we celebrated Italiano day within St Joseph’s community. It was a fantastic celebration! Shout out to all students and parents that put so much effort into the costumes and atmosphere. It was fantastic to then see the Preps and Prima Classe saying their Carnevale jokes during the morning parade! Next students undertook some Italian activities such as Soccer, Bocce and Art.
Our Year 6 students ran the activities, and they did a fantastic job demonstrating patience, and leadership skills to all other students in the community.
In the middle block we were fortunate enough to have Emilio from EPR productions to showcase his dad's migration story from Italy. Students were encouraged to participate in the little stories by dressing up, acting and answering questions they saw on the video!
After the pizza lunch, students were exposed to a little Italian expo. Here students could choose their activity and engage however they wanted to.
A massive thank you to the parents that volunteered to make pasta with our students and especially to Stef Brunetti & Piero Marmina from Fleischer’s bakery for donating freshly made Bomboloni.
We thank everyone for their wishes and enthusiasm leading up to and on the day.
Signora Saladino and Signora Gleeson.
Below are some reflections from our senior students on their version of the day!

In the morning session the classes would walk to the hall where there was an Italian fashion show. Every class would walk on the runway and show off their fabulous outfits and costumes. For example: Some students dressed up as a pizza and a Ferrari.
After the fashion show we had activities. For the first activity we did Michelangelo art. We lay on our back on the floor and got paper, taped it under a table and drew like Michelangelo did, when he painted the inside of the Church's roof in Italy.
After that we went to the hall and played Bocce. It's a game where we get a coloured ball and there is a small white ball. With the coloured ball we try to bowl it as close as we can to the white ball. After the second session we had lunch break. About 1 hour later there was an Italian show.

In the morning we started with Bocce. Its a game with 4 or 8 players. You start off by placing a small white ball and bowling another ball towards the white ball. The point of the game is, the closest player to reach the white ball wins.
For our next session of Italian day we went to the 1 W room, we watched a video about Michelangelo and his painting on the roof. We prepared the paper and some tape under the table, so the grade 5's could get under the table and start drawing. At the end everyone was feeling very good about what we had done so far.
Right after recess a man called Mr. Faggiolio started telling the story about his Papa and about the war that destroyed his home. He made the talk fun by kids volunteering to up the stage and explain all the stuff that his Papa had brought to Australia. At the end of the show we ate some pizza for lunch.
Then after lunch some students went upstairs, including the year 5's for half an hour. The other part of the grade did… Face painting, ingredients to make pasta, making pasta ,and also there was a big open space where we could dance or do a photo booth.

The 2022 Italian Day was really fun. There were many activities such as Soccer, Bocce and even drawing like Michelangelo, it was really fun. The Michelangelo activity was my favourite because we had to tape a piece of paper to the bottom of a desk and draw on our backs like Michelangelo did when he painted the Sistine chapel.
The Bocce in the hall was a blast! Everyone would laugh so much when someone's bocce ball would head straight for the Pallino but then turn at the last second and land nowhere near the Pallino!
Some of us missed out on the Soccer activity because it was raining but I am sure that the people that did do the soccer had a lot of fun.
After the second play had finished everyone went into the hall where there was pasta making, photo shoots and face painting but the best was the freshly baked Bombolone!
Everyone then went to their class rooms, packed up, went home and that was it for the Italian Day.
The only thing that would have made the Italian day more fun would have been sunny weather and seconds of the Bombolone but the rest was perfect!
