Grade Bulletin - Term Three, 2022

'Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:

Religious Education

This Term in Religion, Year 6 will be covering the following units: 

6.5 Mary the Faithful Disciple. 

This unit looks at Mary as a faithful disciple and model for the church. Students will explore women of faith and courage, and Mary as a woman of great faith and courage. Students will then review Catholic Marian devotion in art and music.

 

6.6 The Bible - Our Sacred Story. 

This unit explores the Bible as our Sacred Scriptures. Students review the great story of our tradition: its significant people and events. The unit also briefly introduces the students to the formation of the Bible.

English

Students will study a range of texts that relate to the concept of ‘Fantasy’. Students will engage in modelled, shared and independent tasks relating to reading and viewing, writing and representing, responding and composing and speaking and listening. 

 

Students will also be taught explicit skills in relation to grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. They will be following the Soundwaves spelling program and will have the opportunity to revise their spelling skills using the online component of the program.

 

Later in the term, the students will explore and develop their debating skills. Students will use these skills to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and purposes. 

 

At home, you can assist your child by:

  • Assisting them in proofreading their homework;
  • Promoting neat and careful presentation of work;
  • Correcting their oral language when needed;
  • Assisting them to broaden their vocabulary and
  • Comprehension skills through discussing current affairs;
  • Encouraging reading for enjoyment every day;
  • Encouraging the development of their SMART goals.

Please ensure your child has suitable reading material to bring to school for silent reading each day. 

Mathematics

This term we will be focusing on multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, length, area, two-dimensional space, whole number and data. 

 

At home, you can assist your child by:

Practising times tables. It is expected that all children in Year 6 are practising their times tables regularly. If students are confident in their times tables, they could learn them backwards as division instead, or add a zero to their times tables, e.g. instead of 12 x 2 = 24, learn 120 x 2 = 240.

Science and Technology

Students will be learning about the difference between contact and non-contact forces and how energy is transformed from one form to another. Students are provided with an opportunity to investigate how electrical energy can control movement in products and systems. This unit of work will develop students’ abilities to design, test and evaluate a product or system that demonstrates energy transformation, further developing an understanding of the interrelationship between force and energy.

Mandarin

This term students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will continue their participation in a Chinese language program called the Meg Language Program. The Meg Curriculum is written by the co-author of the Australian Curriculum. All students and teachers will participate in the digital learning platform via Zoom weekly sessions.

History

This term we commence the topic ‘Australia as a Nation’. This topic moves from colonial Australia to the development of Australia as a nation, particularly after 1901. Students explore the factors that led to Federation and experiences of democracy and citizenship over time. They understand the significance of Australia’s British heritage, the Westminster system and other models that influenced the development of Australia's system of government. Students learn about the way of life of people who migrated to Australia and their contributions to Australia's economic and social development.

Creative Arts

In Visual Arts this term the students will create artworks expressing ideas using the shortlisted text from Book Week “Walking in Gagudju Country”. The students will engage with Visual Literacy techniques with a focus on Aboriginal designs to develop an artwork that will be displayed in the Library for Book Week in Week 6. Students will also engage in and appreciate art from Frank Markz to create expressionist artworks.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In Term 3, students will learn and develop skills, strategies and tactics in relation to team sports including Basketball, Netball, Touch Football and Oztag. Students will participate positively in groups and teams, encouraging others and demonstrating sportsmanship throughout the different skill development activities. Students will practise ethical behaviour and fair play when being exposed to movement tasks and challenges.

Homework 

Students are to complete their allocated weekly tasks in their Homework Books.  It is expected that the children will read for at least 20 minutes each night as part of their 45 minutes of nightly homework. Parents are encouraged to discuss what the children have read on a regular basis.  If your child is unable to complete any or all of the homework, please write a brief note in the student diary for the work that is incomplete. Homework is due every Monday.
