Religious Education

K.4 Belonging to God’s People

This unit introduces the students to religious imagery, to the church building, its furnishings and to gestures used.

K.5 God’s Great Family

This unit begins with the story of Abraham and Sarah. It is a story of promise and trust and is formative to our identity as the People of God. The second part of the unit introduces Jesus’ family and tells two short stories of Jesus as a boy. The story of the People of God begins a new chapter in the person of Jesus. This unit focuses on belonging both in the family and with all the People.

At home you can assist your child by:

  • Encouraging your child to pray daily.
  • Attending Mass and describing and explaining the Gospel to your child in words they understand.

English

Reading and Viewing:

The children will view and respond to literature creatively and using different media and digital technologies. Students will be exposed to Indigenous texts and inquire into a range of Indigenous Dreamtime stories. Reading groups will occur each day for students to develop a range of reading strategies.

 Writing and Representing:

This term, the children will learn to compose their own simple informative and imaginative texts. The children will continue to follow the ‘Sound Waves Spelling’ program. They will focus on recording initial, middle and final sounds that we hear in words as well as writing high frequency words. The children will demonstrate an awareness of nouns, adjectives, conjunctions and pronouns.

Speaking and Listening:

In Kindergarten, students learn to listen attentively, follow directions and express themselves fluently in complete sentences. Speaking and listening tasks are necessary in order for children to become successful readers and writers. The children will continue to present their special ‘NEWS’ to the class weekly. This involves the children talking to the class about a particular topic. Each child will have an allocated news day.

Mathematics

This term, the children will demonstrate addition and subtraction by counting forwards by ones to add and counting backwards by ones to subtract. They will explore three-dimensional objects by manipulating, sorting and representing three-dimensional objects. Students will learn to identify Australian coins and notes and will be designing and interpreting their own data displays.

At home, you can assist your child by:

  • practising counting with your child on their counting cards and pose questions such as, “What number comes before and/or after a given number?”
  • ask your child to identify various numbers. For example, “Can you point to the number 12?”
  • practising writing numerals from 0-20 and progress from there. If the children reverse their numbers continue to practise and supervise the direction of writing.

Science and Technology

This term, the children will be engaged in the Earth and Space strand, which focuses on daily and seasonal changes in the environment. The children investigate how living things respond to these changes. They explore their immediate surroundings, the daily weather and ask questions about their observations and experiences.

Mandarin

The students will continue their weekly mandarin lessons via zoom. Students will continue to use spoken Chinese to communicate with teachers and peers. During our Mandarin lessons, students participate in structured and routine interactions, such as using learnt sounds, formulaic phrases, and verbal and non-verbal responses.
