Australian Animal Collages
In the last week of Term 2 the Grade 5 and 6’s finished off their Australian Animal Collages. Contemporary Australian artist Pete Cromer is known for his signature bursts of colour and texture on his collages, paintings and sculptures. Inspired by his work the students designed their own animal, focusing on Australian animals like kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras.
First, they created a lot of painted papers to be used in the collage using a variety of different paint techniques such as marbling, stamping, scraping and blending. The backgrounds were created using liquid water colour and salt, the salt absorbs the colour and leaves a beautiful pattern. The painted papers were used to create the body of their animal, and the geometric and irregular shapes were carefully balanced to create these fun and colourful artworks.

Additionally, some students from Grade 6 used some of their free time at lunch to create a matching brooch of their animal made out of polymer clay. The brooches used similar details to their artwork like colourful shapes and blending clay and after being fired in the oven to harden were finished with a gloss. Here are the students proudly wearing their brooches.
