This term, year 12 students are continuing with course and pathways exploration in the lead up to the opening of VTAC registrations on Mon 1 August.
In the Explore program we will be discussing the importance of planning and preparation, and in particular the use of resources such as Career News.
Open Days are coming up in late July and early August, and a campus visit is a must for any student considering further study in 2023 and beyond.
University of Melbourne 4 Day Camp
In early April I was told about this program for Engineering & IT that the University of Melbourne runs, it’s a 4-year program beginning with a camp where you stay on campus for about 4 days.
The application requirements were that you had to be a year 9 girl with an interest in engineering or IT. While I was intrigued, I was also really scared about it, but after a very long and painstaking application process I found out I got in! The camp ran in the second week of the winter holidays.
The reason that the University of Melbourne runs this program every year is because they want to create equal numbers in engineering and IT workplaces. For every 10 people in an engineering career only 1-2 of them are women!
Despite my initial hesitation I decided to go to because engineering has always been something that I had an interest in so I figured that this would be a great place to start exploring my career.
I didn’t realise how fun it would be. When I got there, I was honestly really surprised at how engaging and riveting the experience was. Some of my favourite things we did there were programming robots to dance and looking at VR and AR headsets.
It wasn’t all just fun and games though, we also attended lectures about engineering and IT which were somehow equally as entertaining. I love learning all these new things about how certain machines were made and the design process of engineering as well.
I also really enjoyed learning about what I can be doing now to help my future career at the career panel night we had. We had 5 panellists who were all women with successful careers in engineering or IT.
The whole experience was totally worth it even if it was just for the free merchandise and hot chocolate machine.
In all seriousness the event was 100 times better than I thought it would be and it was so fulfilling to be able to meet so many like-minded girls my age.
If you are even given the opportunity to go, I would highly recommend that you go and participate. It was just so worth it. If I could do it again I totally would.
