College Captain Report
State Parliament Visit
On the 21st of June, The Hon. Bruce Atkinson warmly invited our College Captains to attend his annual School Captains Function at Parliament House.
In lieu of pandemic times, this years’ School Captains Function was the first to run since 2019, so the whole team was very excited to attend the event on Tuesday the 21st.
A passive-aggressive rock-paper scissors tournament determined that Bailey, Ms Wallis and myself would be joining The Hon. Bruce Atkinson and the other members of the Legislative Assembly for the evenings proceedings.
Coming from a background with a Legal interest, I was especially keen to be a part of the tour of Parliament, and was particularly impressed to have the opportunity to sit in on the adjournments that were running at the time.
At the evening’s beginning, Bruce said a few words about the history of the building ($4 million of 18 carat gold lining the walls?! A reflection of Melbourne’s economy at the time), and reiterated the significance of these events; he’s been running them for a large portion of his 30-year term and truly believes in the merit of forming connections with the young leaders of society.
We received an in-depth tour of the House’s facilities, guided by our very own Nick Wakeling, and learnt in detail about some of the notable events and locations within Parliament House.
I speak for the whole team when I extend my gratitude to Ms Carrie Wallis for playing chauffer and accompanying us to the event; your guidance is always welcome and appreciated and I hope you too learnt something new!
Knox Youth Forum
The Knox Youth Forum is an event run by Nick Wakeling and this year we had the privilege of being invited to represent the college.
We were recently welcomed back for our 3rd meeting and had representatives from headspace to facilitate our discussions.
Headspace provides information, support and services to young people, aged 12-25 years, and their families and friends across Australia. Their services can help with mental health, physical health, schooling, work and many other situations.
Some examples of these are career support, a one off session or up to 6-8 weeks of counselling with a trained professional and even volunteer drivers who can help you get those hours up!
The conversations that we had focused on how well known headspace is to students, school’s well-being and careers programs and mental health after the past two years of COVID.
We had some really in depth discussions and it was great to see there was a lot of agreement between the leaders on what is happening and what should happen going forward with these issues.
