Work Experience
Year 10
As part of their preparation for course selection for 2023, Year 10 students have been engaged in Work Experience, and University and TAFE tours. We have had some very positive feedback from each of these events and here are some of the reports from our students:
Year 10 Work Experience
Work experience was great. I personally had a wonderful time in my placement at Hairhouse Warehouse Knox. I did a whole lot of cleaning but I was also given chances to work practically on training dummies. I got to cut, wash, style and even colour them. It was a great way to learn about the industry I want to enter when I’m older. I was even offered a job there so that they can set me up for being an apprentice next year. I had the best week ever.

Deakin Tour
My time at Deakin has been fantastic. This experience has illuminated the appeal to a career in science which I have taken great interest in. I really enjoyed the practical experiments as they were all entirely new to me alongside all of the new and impressive equipment we were able to try out over the week.
Although I enjoyed everything we did, my favourite part of the week was most definitely the microbiology practicals such as extracting our cheek cells and seeing what we could find. My favourite practical from the chemistry part was placing a rose and banana in liquid nitrogen and smashing it. What a sight to see! It has really opened my eyes into a possible pathway of research, and I wouldn't have thought of it myself.
All in all, I am extremely grateful to have had the unique opportunity of doing work experience at such an inspiring place surrounded by some truly passionate people, to make friends with other like-minded students and to explore what the future may hold.

Year 10 University and TAFE Excursions
We visited the Chadstone campus of Holmesglen Institute. They have lots of different trade options. First we saw the bricklaying and stonemasonry. Shortly after that we saw everything else which included building and construction, electrical, flooring, plastering, tiling and lastly the gas and plumbing. After we left the workshops we saw a wide range of other specialties, including business and finance, community and health services, and art/design.
Each course had a large amount of equipment and rooms. I was more interested in the workshops because they had such a massive space to practice to be ready for real life. All round, Holmesglen was an incredible experience and a fantastic facility.

Year 10 University Excursions
Visiting Monash and Deakin University was an incredible opportunity that Wantirna College Year 10 students experienced. Our first tour was at Monash University.
Monash invited us into one of their high-tech science lecture rooms to showcase all the amazing options the institute has to offer, they discussed the incredible social side of studying at Monash and organised some students from different degree areas to share their experiences and then guide us around to some of the campus buildings, Monash is so big it has its own post code!
They have multiple fast food restaurants, a gym, swimming pool and even a grocery store. At Deakin, we attended a presentation in one of their largest lecture rooms, and were then separated into groups that we had the most interest in, such as science and law. We then went on a tour around the campus. They had very nice facilities especially for teaching and sport degrees.
This was a wonderful experience that allowed all year 10s to gain insight into what our futures can hold.

Work Experience
My work experience placement was in the workshop at Patterson Cheney Holden. I did many things, such as servicing vehicles and cleaning engines. On the third day of my placement I fixed the automatic transmission on a Holden Astra.
I enjoyed my week of work experience and hope to do another placement in the future. My employer offered me a school-based apprenticeship, which I will start in Year 11.
