Year 10 Global Studies Fieldwork

Last Thursday, Year 10 Global Studies students visited Brisbane City Council's ‘Toward Zero Waste Education Centre’ and Landfill facility at Rochedale, as well as St Vinnies charity sorting centre, Lawnton as part of their investigation into Fast Fashion and in particular the environmental impacts of Fast Fashion in Global Studies. The aim of the fieldwork was to see firsthand what happens to unwanted Fast Fashion items if they are thrown away or donated to charity.

This small but very passionate group of students were staggered by the sight of landfill and the volume of waste generated daily in our city. They put the tour guide through his paces and asked some insightful questions about how Council are working to reduce waste, how the waste is currently managed and what will happen when the space at the Rochedale facility runs out. At St Vinnie’s the students were amazed at the volume of donations at the charity sorting centre and unfortunately how much of this is not suitable to be sold in the charity shops in Australia. Bales of clothing that will be exported overseas were piled high in this facility. Students saw how the donations that can be sold are sorted and stored and heard about the impact of the pandemic on this charity.

This fieldwork not only provided data and information to support learning and understanding of the challenge of Fast Fashion, but it also led to these students becoming confident that they will be change-makers on this issue!

Business Bites

Layla Bacon led the Year 12 Business class on a ‘Business Bites’ lesson in Sustainability in Business. Students learnt about corporate and social responsibility, the role of business ethics, philanthropic responsibility and the Triple Bottom Line. These sessions are a great opportunity for our students to take responsibility for a topic, research the content,  prepare resources, including a powerpoint, handout, quiz and lead their class in various activities. It gives them an insight into the role of a business leader and also being able to deliver in front of an audience, an important skill for today’s world.  Well done, Layla!
