Welcome to Term 3.

The final couple of weeks of Term 2 were  busy for everyone.

The Years 10 and 11 exams were completed, with the Springvale Town Hall being hired for yet another use, which was highly successful.

The Year 7s finally managed to visit Healesville with a touch of sunshine, quite a stark difference to the first date we attempted when it was experiencing a dusting of snow!

The music staff were again extremely busy with their music soirees on successive evenings at Tullow. Well done and congratulations to everyone who was involved.

There are a number of upcoming dates for family calendars:

Next Monday, 18th July, there will be Year 12 English orals all day. Year 12 students will only be required at school for their nominated time period. They are required to wear the school uniform please.

Tuesday 26th July is the Year 12 Parent Student Teacher Learning Conversations, commencing at 3.30pm online. Bookings will need to be done via PTOline, with codes / links being sent to parents soon.

Alumni Advanced notice

There will be a 30 year Reunion on Sunday 13th November  2.00-5.00pm for the class of 1992. Details are available from Kylie Taberner here at the school.

Subject Selections 2023

Subject selections for 2023 (for Years 10-12 2023) today. How quickly this comes around each year!  Parents are asked to discuss subjects for next year with their daughter(s) and if there are queries to contact Ms Alison Pickard or  Mr Steve McPhail. You can also speak to the relevant YLL (Year Level Leader).

Top End Tour

Twenty-eight students and four staff headed off on the inaugural Top End Tour, travelling from Melbourne to Darwin, via Uluru, Alice Springs, Daly Waters, Mataranka, Katherine and Kakadu during Week 1 of the holidays.  The review of this tour will appear in the next Newsletter, but suffice to say it was the trip of a lifetime for all of us. I cannot imagine another time when these students will travel with thirty one other people through this wonderful country we call home.

Peace Pole Ceremony

On Friday 10th June we were finally able to unveil our Rotary Peace Pole within the St Brigid’s cross garden in front of the convent. Please feel free to visit the Convent front garden  to see the pole that celebrates the hopes and dreams of the entire human family. The languages on the pole state ‘May Peace Prevail On Earth’. Local dignitaries included Rotarians, Father J.B. Dang and Ms Rosy Tran from Our Lady of La Vang Shrine, our local Vietnamese Catholic Church, Mayor Cr Jim Memeti (Dandenong Ward), Mr Meng Heang (ALP) and Dr Tien Kieu, Victorian MP.

Family Learning Centre

It is with enormous thanks that we acknowledge the contribution to the Family Learning Centre that Jacqui Adams has given. Jacqui is in her ninth year of volunteering as an English Language teacher. She has assisted countless members of our Killester community and the wider Springvale community with her work. Currently we have five Killester mothers involved with the classes, two with daughters in Year 7, one with two daughters in the school, one with daughters who finished at Killester twenty years ago and one with a daughter in Year 10 and another at university.

Thank you so much for all that you have done and do, Jacqui, from all of us at Killester.

CONGRATULATIONS

I recently travelled to the 19th Cadet/Junior/U21 and 21st Senior Oceania Karate Championships in New Caledonia.  It was a fabulous experience and a real honour to represent Australia in the sport I absolutely love.  I brought home a bronze medal in Cadet Kumite Female -54kgs (narrowly missing a spot in the final 3-2) and a silver medal in the Cadet Kumite Female team event, resulting in me placing 23 in the World Karate Federation rankings for my division.  I am now preparing for the National Championships in Rockhampton and I have also been nominated to compete at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Birmingham in September.

Learn To Speak English While You Make New Friends

Are you too shy to talk to people because you cannot speak English very well? Well you can improve your English because Killester College runs a ‘Conversational English Class for adults’ every Monday morning at 10:00am till 12:00pm during school term, for parents, family members and friends.  Classes are fun, where you are safe to try your new language skills in a friendly place. You will learn words that you may use everyday while at the same time make new friends who will encourage you to talk in English.  We also talk about things that are happening in our community.

We would love you to join us to help improve your English and at the same time have lots of fun.  Mondays 10.00am till 12.00pm in the Family Learning Centre at Killester College. Please contact Loreto Cannon at the College or via email at lcannon@killester.vic.edu.au to book.  We hope to see you there.

Front Office Reminders

LEAVING EARLY

If your daughter is leaving school early for any reason, please make sure she has a signed note from Parent/Guardian to give to her Homeroom Teacher in the morning. Your daughter needs to then bring that signed note with her to the Front Office at the time of her departure. It is your daughter’s responsibility to come to the office at the time arranged for pick up. Students are NOT PERMITTED to make their own way home or to an appointment. A Parent or Guardian MUST come into the front office to pick up the student. Students are asked NOT to make contact with Parents/Guardians directly via their mobile phone, to arrange to go home while at school as use of their mobile phone is not permitted. This contact will be made by Front Office or teaching staff.

LATE TO SCHOOL

Please make sure your daughter signs in at the Front Office if she is late to school. If she does not sign in at the Front Office you will receive an SMS asking to explain her absence.

ABSENCES

If your daughter is going to be absent from school for any reason please make sure you ring the Front Office to inform them, preferably before 9.00 am. The Front Office staff will then mark your daughter’s roll accordingly so you do not receive an SMS.
