Year 7 Textiles

During the last two weeks of Term 2, we had been learning about Fast Fashion and Sustainability in textiles.  For example, did you know, fashion and textiles is one of the most polluting industries in the world?  Every stage in a garment's life threatens our planet and its resources.  Up to 8,000 different chemicals are used to turn raw materials into clothes, including a range of pesticides, dyeing and finishing processes. eg. More than 25 per cent of the world's pesticides are used in conventional cotton production. Many of our garments that we discard and donate actually end up polluting the environment in developing countries or in landfill.

In light of this, we had fun upcycling our old t-shirts into functional tote bags! Here are our results.

The WOW factor with Textiles and Fashion

In Semester One we have made it our mission to ‘wow’ students with our textiles courses. Our Year 7 and 8 students have honed their hand sewing skills and made an array of items from flower accessories to mini cushions to wise bird diary holders. They are now all skilled at embroidery and sewing buttons as well as creating little gifts. The junior students have also developed machine sewing skills and have been able to applique and construct a tote bag. The Year 7 students constructed Me Me bags with little characters whilst the year 8 students have gone with Flower Power bags. Year 7 students upcycled T-Shirts into shopping bags to help stop land fill. Some of the year 8s even made wearable paper bag skirts. The Year 9 students have fine-tuned their sewing skills by making gorgeous summer shorts, which can double as pjs. They have created story boards and mood boards as an introduction into the design process. The Fashion Workshop students at Year 10 have learnt how to build a folio by also using the design process. The students focused on street wear and were influenced by designers such as Balenciaga to design a modern streetwear range. Then they researched a fashion era and made wrap skirts from a 70’s vintage pattern. Earlier in the semester the Year 11 and 12 students were treated to a fabulous exhibition featuring the work of Coco Chanel at the National Gallery of Victoria. The students were impressed with the works of this great lady of Fashion and reveled all the fashion and the accessories displayed. The Year 11 Applied Fashion VET students continued with folio development for the fantasy theme. They further explored the design process with research, ideation, mood boards and finally sketches to express and develop their ideas. The students drafted patterns and finally they are now in the process of constructing their garments. Just wait for the big reveal at the fashion parade later in the year! The Year 12 fashion students have been busy discovering and investigating all about fibres and fabrics. They had a lot of fun spinning wool, making fabrics and testing them. The students have begun developing folios for the new Eco chic Unit which looks at sustainability in the fashion industry. This year they are charged with saving the world by re-costuming avatars based on a heroine from a novel or film. As well as amping up these heroines, they are also entering the realm of the fantasy world designing and making gowns for the theme, “East of the Sun West of the Moon”. These will all be unveiled at the fashion parade in Term 4. Clear your calendars as this will be something to look forward to.

Year 7 Food Technology

In Ms Pickard’s Year 7 Food Technology class the students have been learning about kitchen safety, recipe basics, measurement, healthy eating and how to use tools and kitchen equipment. This practical class involved the students designing, then kneading, proving, rolling and baking their own delicious pizza.
