CIS Junior Italian Poetry Competition

On Tuesday 21 June the Year 7 & 8 Italian students had a wonderful opportunity to participate in the Junior Italian Poetry Competition organised by Centre of Italian Studies (CIS) Carlton. There were three poems and we had to choose one. The poem we recited was called “Acqua Acqua” by Roberto Piumini, which describes different elements of the earth like fire, water and air. The strategies we used to memorise the poem was to practise in the shower, we recited the poem many times with our peers, and practised line by line. We also listened to the poetry audio files without the text and with the text which proved useful as it helped us figure out how to use expression in some of the lines. When memorising our poem we enjoyed learning how to pronounce each word, we recited it together, as well as understood what the poem meant and learned new words in Italian. We felt nervous during the actual competition, but afterwards we felt very relieved that we did it, after all our hard work. The judge was understanding that we were anxious. We would recommend other students participate in this competition as it helps with their memorisation and oral skills, which is useful for the rest of people's school life.
