Painting and Printmaking

Students from the Year 10 elective Painting and Printmaking, followed the art process to finalise their original and creative compositions for the serigraphy printmaking unit. Students had the choice of drawing their design with pencil on paper or digitally using Adobe Illustrator. The designs were printed using fabric inks onto black or calico fabric bags using our thermal printer.

Visual Communication Design

In Year 9 Visual Communication Design, students followed the design process to create the graphic surface design for a ceramic mug. Addressing the needs outlined in the Design Brief and using Adobe Illustrator, students created original mug designs. The designs were printed on decal paper and were carefully applied to the mug’s surface.

The final unit for the subject is for students to design the packaging for their mug.

Below is feedback from the students:

Shaleeya Dayal: I learnt design elements and design principles and how to understand VCD language better. I really liked how we got to design whatever we wanted and make it on a mug and on the package. I liked the way that I was able to appeal to myself and enjoy making this mug during my time in class and at home.

Cassidy Lopez: I learnt how to use Adobe Illustrator to develop my own mug design which we were able to print onto real mugs with decal paper. I have enjoyed the process of designing a mug and its packaging design as it has allowed me to bring out a more creative side of myself.

Haley Nguyen: What I've learnt from this unit of VC is the principles and elements of design and learning how to use programs like Adobe Illustrator.  A few things I really enjoyed were being able to make and design my own mug.

Alika Sakhan: During the time I spent in VISCOM experimenting on Adobe Illustrator and researching design and packaging. I learnt that a lot of time and effort is put into creating designs for mugs, posters, packaging etc. I liked that we were able to incorporate our interests into our designs and by the end of the class we'll be able to take it home with us.

Photography and Film

During the analogue photography unit for Photography and Film, when students were waiting to work in the darkroom or had finished developing their photos, students worked on the Cat Art unit. This unit was influenced by Koty Vezde’s instagram series, Cat Universe. Koty Vezde crops a cat’s head onto another animal, a human’s body or into food. This unit of work demonstrated students’ cropping and blending skills when using Adobe Photoshop and their creativity of merging two unusual objects together to create a surreal image.

EXTRAordinary

"The ordinary becoming EXTRAordinary” was the theme for the Year 10 elective, Photography and Film analogue photography unit. The black and white photographs our students took at the Royal Botanic Gardens using SLR cameras, towards the end of last term, were processed and developed in our darkroom this term. Students achieved success when printing their photographs as they accurately set the aperture and focus whilst considering composition on the SLR camera prior to taking each photograph. In the darkroom, students made a test strip, selected the correct exposure time and printed their images onto 8”x10” photographic paper. They have produced impressive results!

Below is our students sharing their experience in the darkroom:

Samantha FlorGetting the opportunity to work in the dark room was a very fun and interesting experience. I was able to learn a lot of techniques like adjusting an enlarger, timing the exposure, and developing prints in the chemicals which all together made me learn how to make a print using film. Being in the dark room and developing prints gave me a different perspective and understanding of how photography and film works.

Cathy HoangBeing in the darkroom was such a privilege and a great experience to have, I was able to learn the true concept of how photography and film really works. While working in the darkroom, it helped me to further develop my understanding about the art of photography. It's not all about capturing a photo with the click of a button and going to Kmart to go print it. It was amazing to have the opportunity to learn about how photography has developed over the many years.

Tanvir Hothi: I loved the darkroom. I really enjoyed it. Being able to control the lighting in the darkroom is amazing. It was all about conveying the print and getting that good feeling that you would experience when you exposed the film and walking out of the darkroom feeling pleased with whatever came out, good or bad. There's a whole new different place inside. It's wonderful.

Tara MaiThe assignment was really memorable and a once in a lifetime experience. The excursion was really fun and I saw this class as a refreshing break away from my other subjects. I was able to develop new skills and express myself creatively.

Georgette O'BrienThis project has been a lot of fun for me! Being able to go on an excursion to the city, to the botanical gardens, and to roam around anywhere we wanted to take photos was, in my opinion, a very enjoyable experience. It was exciting to be able to use our creativity while taking images and exploring the botanical gardens. Not only was it a great day, but returning to the dark room and developing our images was as interesting. I've been addicted to printing images in the dark room and haven't been able to stop.

Sybil ShahidDuring my time in the darkroom, I learnt not just about the process of developing film but how amazing each photo is. I learnt about the process, time and effort it takes not to create one photograph, giving me a greater appreciation for photographers who do this everyday. Being in the darkroom was an incredible experience, and I am grateful for being able to do this, as I may not ever have this opportunity again.

Naychi SoemoeThe darkroom and film was a new and enjoyable experience where we got to learn to use film cameras and develop our rolls of film. The art teacher helped us develop and set up the chemicals used which made the process much easier. The Darkroom and seeing our photos get printed onto contact paper was very interesting and involved a lot of trial and error to get the best print. This whole assignment was very enjoyable as we got to learn how to use things that were big in the past.

Natalie SusteI enjoyed working in the darkroom as it is a one in a lifetime experience! I enjoyed seeing the film that I took, come to life.

Year 8 Art

In Term 2 for Year 8 Art, students painted close up acrylic paintings, inspired by American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. The students’ artworks demonstrate their ability to mix the correct colours from their reference photograph, to blend colours to create tone and paintbrush techniques to show texture.

As their teacher, I am very impressed with the realism of their artworks!

Year 11 Art

Our Year 11 Art students are congratulated on their amazing black and white relief prints.  These were all designed around the theme of identity and hand carved and printed.  Students also printed embossed white prints from the same plate.
