KHS Agriculture Team

Its Show Time for the Kempsey High Ag Team

Show Preparation

Students have undertaken quite a bit of preparation in the last couple of weeks, and students and cattle were ready to go for the many shows all across NSW. It takes quite a lot of preparation, teamwork and support from the school community to get to these events and we know how much enjoyment and satisfaction the students, staff, parents and carers get from being involved.

Wallamba Show

The girls travelled to the Wallamba Show on Saturday 19 March to try out for the Sydney Royal, despite a wet and cold day they both had a successful day.

Imogen Dries of Year 11 participated in both the Junior Judging and Paraders and was successful in gaining 1 of only 10 spots to represent Group 2 at the Sydney Royal for Paraders

Freya Weismantel of Year 12 participated in the Junior Judging and was successful in gaining 1 of only 2 spots to represent Group 2, Freya went on to be awarded Reserve Champion Junior Judge. Freya is the only student in KHS history to have been selected twice to represent Group 2 for Junior Judging at the Sydney Royal.

Kempsey Show

It was the first show back after 2 years of lock-downs and cancelled Ag shows and the Kempsey Show went off with a bang!! The KHS Ag team had a great couple of days, prepping and washing cattle, packing the trailer, and setting up on Monday ready for an early start on Tuesday morning. No one complained and arrived ready for the day with so much enthusiasm it bought smiles to all the parent helper faces, who made it possible for these students to do what they love and get back in the show ring. Their enjoyment spoke for itself with some outstanding results throughout the day.

The day started with the weight guessing competition and saw young Lincoln Mottee of Year 7 win the special award sponsored by Norco for his guess, which came within 500gms of the weight of Norco's Michael Barbour.  Phoebe Southwell placed 1st and Freya Weismantel placed 3rd in the 16-17 yr age group. Paraders then followed with more great results, Tilly Weismantel received Highly commended in the 12-13 yrs, Phoebe Southwell and Hayden Carter received Highly commended, Imogen Dries 3rd and Freya Weismantel 1st in the 16-17 yrs, Freya then went on to be awarded Champion Parader over all age groups.

Junior Judging then commenced and again the students shone, Tilly Weismantel receiving 2nd place in 12-13 yrs, Seth Osborne 3rd, Breanna Reinhold 2nd and Lylah Weismantel 1st in the 14-15 yrs, Hayden Carter 3rd, Phoebe Southwell 2nd and Freya Weismantel 1st in the 16-17 yrs. Students who placed first in their age group then gave an oral presentation on their reasoning. Lylah Weismantel placed 3rd overall and Freya Weismantel received Champion Junior Judge. Freya also received the Champion trophy in both events, something not done in many many years.

The steer classes then started and saw the Lightweight Steer Hypo awarded 1st place, Middleweight steers Teddy Bear in 4th place and Stussy in 2nd place, Heavyweights Phil in 2nd place and Pooh Bear in 1st with a great final result of Hypo awarded Champion steer overall. This saw the KHS Ag team get the triple whammy with Champions over all 3 events. After a long day, the students then competed in the Young Farmers Challenge with 3 teams of 4 students competing against each other and other schools. The KHS Ag team took out the Reserve Champion team with students Riley Mitchell, Ella Saul, Seth Osborne and Jake Sherratt.

Well done KHS Ag team!!

The purpose of the program is to better your skills in several areas such as public speaking, community involvement, event organisation and personal presentation. Determined on judging, interview, dinner and public speaking; these young women show their support for their local show and make us all proud.

Well done to all of our students who participated in Kempsey Show Society’s Young Woman of the year 2022 competition.

Well done to all Kempsey High School students who supported our local show and helped make it such a success. Kempsey High School students participated in many aspects of the Show. Horse events, prize-winning fruit and veggies in the Pavilion, as well as many prizes in the Cooking section, Photography and Arts and Crafts. The poultry shed had some broad ribbon winners and a highlight of the show was the success of the Ag team. The biggest highlight was the results to come out of the Young Women of the Year contest, where we had 5 amazing young ladies enter the competition. Alice McNee come away with runner up and Ebony Haywood in Highly Commended in the Teen section.

Past student Katie Barnett was sashed 2022 Young Women of the Year and was very heavily involved in the helping and organising of this year's Kempsey Show.

Katie is currently studying for a double degree at UNE and is Assistant Manager on a sheep property. She is an amazing role model to many young women in our community.

We wish her well in representing our region over the coming year.
