Principal's Report

Michelle Mackenlay

Term 2 is coming to an end, with the last day of term next Friday, 24th June at 2:30pm. It has been an eventful term ,jam packed with learning and school events that we have been unable to do in previous years.

However, with the cold weather, many of our students and staff have contracted a range of illnesses, ranging from common colds, COVID-19 and the flu. This has meant that on some days, classes may have had around 10 of their students missing on one day.

This has also been the case for many of our staff, and many teachers across schools in the state are facing every day difficulties in getting replacement staff on most days. This has meant we have had to adapt daily to cover staff absences, using strategies such as splitting classes (where one class is spread to other classes), cancelling of specialist classes (e.g music or P.E), extra internal staff, such as members of our Leadership Team taking classes. We are trying our very best to manage these challenging conditions and hope that this improves once we get through Winter.

On an additional note, we have been trying very hard to find an Auslan teacher. After advertising three times we have had no applicants. To be a qualified Auslan teacher in a Victorian school you need specific educational/Auslan qualifications. This limits the pool of potential applicants. Auslan teachers are highly sought out by schools, so many are already in long-standing positions. I have spoken to the Department of Education about getting us some support, as well as reaching out to the Victorian College of the Deaf. I am currently investigating other options (e.g. other languages, online programs etc) and will update our school community in early Term 3 via the newsletter.

Student Fundraising Pyjama Day

Following consultation with students throughout the school our Student Representative Council have chosen to hold a fundraising day to raise funds for the Royal Children’s

Hospital. On the 23rd June students and staff are invited to wear their pyjamas to school and bring a gold coin donation which will be collected by our Student Council Representatives. This is a fantastic opportunity to wear your favourite pyjamas, robes, onesies or oodies.

Sporting News

Last Thursday, our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Lightning Premiership. Participation in Lightning Premiership, allowed students to compete against other schools in a sport of their choice (Netball, Soccer, AFL, Newcombe, T-Ball). Some of our students stated this event was ‘the best day ever’ and‘best day of the year so far’. Our students were very successful in their events and the students demonstrated our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, representing our school with pride. Our AFL team was so successful that they go onto a play off against Cranbourne East Primary School next week. The winner of this match, will then go onto Division AFL. Go Clyde! Please see some photos in the Lightening Premiership section of this newsletter edition.

I would also like to congratulate, Caleb G, from Year 6, who on Wednesday raced in the Regional Cross Country on Wednesday. After coming 7th in the Division event two weeks ago, Caleb was the only Clyde PS student who made it through to Wednesday's Regional event. Caleb did a terrific job at the event against some very strong competitors. What an achievement, well done Caleb!

Congratulations!

Mrs Foden wanted to share with the Clyde PS community that her daughter  Madison was born on May 31st at 12.07pm.  She was 3.3kg and 50cm long.  Mrs Foden and her family are looking forward to spending time at home together getting to know their daughter and sister.

Community Forum

On Tuesday morning, students from our Foundation classes walked down to the Clyde Public Hall, accompanied by their teachers and School Captains Jayda and Sam. Our students were invited by the City of Casey Council to their community forum on  creating the new community space which is being built at the back of Clyde Primary School, off Valetta Street. Our School Captains started the morning by doing the Acknowledgement of Country, to a group of community members all connected to Clyde in various ways. Our Foundation students then brought smiles to the faces of the audience by performing their "Friends of 10" song and dance. Sam and Jayda stayed on throughout the forum to share their ideas on what made the Clyde township a great place to be, and worked alongside local MP, Jordan Crugnale, to talk about concerns around traffic safety and housing growth. Well done everyone!

Buddies

From early in Term 3 students will have the opportunity to participate in a Buddy Program. This program has been developed through consultation with students through our School Representative Council.

The Buddy Program at Clyde Primary School will be implemented across the whole school and will reflect our core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. The new program is designed to provide support and build positive relationships between junior and senior students and empower students to grow in confidence and responsibility.

There will be planned sessions across the term where students will be able to meet with their Buddies and also additional opportunities where Buddies can meet to develop social skills such as during eating time or when outside on the playground. Students in Foundation to Year Two will be paired with students from Years Three to Six.

Further information regarding the program with be sent to families during Term 3.

School Wide Positive Behaviours at Clyde Primary School

Following the successful introduction of SWPBS at Clyde we have continued to evaluate the success of the program and have identified that some students need increased structured support when accessing Specialist lessons. As a result we have developed an approach where parents of students identified will be contacted by the Specialist teacher and a structured plan developed to provide the additional support. This may include individual rewards, individual goals, individualised accommodations and steps the teacher will take if the student is not following expectations.

And finally, if I don't see you around the school next week, I would like you all to have a happy school holiday break. Stay warm and we will see you back at school on Monday 11th July.
