Foundation News
With the cold weather setting in, it is pleasing to see Foundation students wearing their winter uniforms and practising good hygiene habits. We appreciate sick students being kept at home and thank parents in advance for keeping us up to date via email.
This is a timely reminder for parents to check their children's school clothing, especially school jumpers. Please ensure your children's uniform is visibly named so that items can be returned quickly. We have a few students who have currently misplaced their school jumper. If you could please check your children have correct jumpers, that would be appreciated.
We have been very fortunate to welcome parent helpers into our learning space this term. The students have loved welcoming parents and grandparents and have appreciated being supported during formal learning.
It is not too late to volunteer as a parent helper if you would like to assist us in our learning space. Please email your child's homeroom teacher with your availability and we would love to schedule you in. It is a prerequisite that all parent helpers attend the Parent Helper Induction session, have a WWC check and have had three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Maths
This fortnight, students have been investigating situations requiring data collection and presentation. They have explored the different ways data can be sorted and classified and have represented information in simple displays. The children explored different ways they could group and sort animal picture cards, for example, categorising by big and small, animals with spots and without, Australian animals and Safari animals and more.
The children also collected and analysed data based on their favourite colours. They answered a range of 'yes'/'no' questions to show their understanding of our data display. The children sorted themselves into different categories to collect information and data. Some examples included sorting by, hair colour, eye colour, clothing, family structures, as well as favourite foods and favourite games.
Inquiry
This term, students in Foundation have begun to explore the unit: ‘Science as a Human Endeavour’, investigating the question ‘What do Living Things Need to Survive?’. Recently, students have spent time describing the physical features of living creatures. They have learnt to define the word 'habitat' and are currently learning to identify and describe the habitat of different living creatures. The children have identified space, air, food, water, shelter as critical components for survival. The students will continue to explore these concepts cross-curricula throughout the term.
Religion
This Term, the children are engaging in unit ‘The World Around Us’. In this unit, students have begun to explore the goodness and beauty of God’s creation by listening to biblical stories and following the teachings and message of Jesus Christ and God’s love for us.
This fortnight, the children explored the creation story from the Old Testament and investigated how the creation story represents and symbolises God's love for us all. The children engaged in Godly Play to retell the creation story to foster their interpretation of the ways the natural world and humanity reveal God’s love.
The children were then given the opportunity to show their interpretation of the creation story by making their own collage including all the things they love and appreciate in the story. This week, the children will begin to explore the elements of nature and how being surrounded by nature's beauty can make us feel.
