A deeper look at Maths

St. Raphael's adheres to the Victorian Curriculum when teaching Mathematics. The Curriculum aims to be relevant and applicable to 21st century learning. For students to develop a deeper conceptual understanding, it is important they learn more than just 'facts.' Students need to develop increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. These four proficiencies are intertwined and enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by using mathematical strategies to make informed decisions to solve problems efficiently. It is important teachers and families foster students ability to engage in different elements of Maths.

For further information on the Mathematical Proficiencies, explore the Department's Numeracy Guide.

At home ideas

Looking for ways to integrate number sense activities into your daily routines within your child? Look no further! Here are some handy activities you can do while driving the car, cutting vegetables, or waiting at the dentist.

1. What's the question? Provide your child with an answer and have them come up with a question. For example, the answer is 7, what could the question be? This could be turned into a worded problem, a real-life story or a number sentence.

2. Who Am I? Not only are these important for mental math practice, but they are a great way to reinforce Maths vocabulary. For example, I am an even number greater than ten but less than twenty. The sum of my digits is nine. Who am I?

3. Which Number does not belong? Provide your child with a list of numbers. Justify which number does not belong (hint: sometimes there can be different responses and justifications which are valid!) For example, 4,12,17, 8, 20 - The number 17 does not belong because it is an odd number and is not a multiple of 4.

NAPLAN - Year 3 and 5

Students in Year 3 and Year 5 should be extremely prod of themselves for completing NAPLAN last week. The students were calm and composed throughout each test and of course they tried their absolute best.

NAPLAN catch-up tests will continue until Friday 20th May.

Please find further information regarding NAPLAN here.
