Understanding the Writing Process

During our writing sessions at St. Raphael's the children follow a writing process to assist them with scaffolding their thoughts and producing a thought out piece of writing.

"Writing is a complex combination of skills which is best taught by breaking down the

process. The writing process involves a series of steps to follow in producing a finished piece of writing. By breaking down writing step-by-step, the mystery is removed and writer’s block is reduced. Most importantly, students discover the benefits of constructive feedback on their writing, and they progressively master, and enjoy writing."

The writing process can be looked at within its different stages, although they will often overlap, and generally students will move back and forth between them.

Prewriting

At this stage students use their Writer's Notebook to gather an outline of their ideas by brainstorming and using thinking prompts for mapping out their thoughts. Students consider the audience and purpose for their writing.

Drafting

Students create an initial composition by writing down all of their ideas in an organised

way. A template or scaffold can be used for assistance to organise initial thoughts and ideas.

Revising

During the stage of revising students are encouraged to review, modify and reorganise their work by adding details, changing vocabulary, deleting content and attending to the style and tone of their writing. The goal is to improve the draft.

Editing

This is where the writer proofreads and edits their work for errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Publishing

At this stage students are encouraged to share their work with others.

NAPLAN - Year 3 and 5

Students in Year 3 and Year 5 should be extremely prod of themselves for completing NAPLAN last week. The students were calm and composed throughout each test and of course they tried their absolute best.

NAPLAN catch-up tests will continue until Friday 20th May.

Please find further information regarding NAPLAN here.
