Year 5/6 News
Welcome
Congratulations to all the students who showed terrific flexibility in adjusting to a variety of different arrangements for Naplan week. In particular a hearty well done to the Year 5's who approached the week of assessments with great maturity and stamina.
Now that Naplan is over much of our attention turns to our Urban Camp which is a little over a week away. Students and staff are excited for what will be a great learning experience with plenty of of fun and interesting activities planned. A reminder that it is an 8.15am arrival on the day of camp. Please keep a look out for an announcement on the eve of camp which will contain a number of reminders.
PBL
In the last fortnight in PBL, the students have been looking at the upcoming election and the ideas surrounding that such as voting and policies. Students have unpacked the idea of democracy and political systems and investigated different ideas about ruling and leading. For example, students have looked at the monarchy's role in Australia. We have begun to research different levels of government through making letters of complaint depending on what sort of problem they have - which the students enjoyed doing in groups. This unit should set us up nicely for our urban camp next week where we will go to parliament and The Old Melbourne Goal.
Literacy
In the Year 5/6 unit this week, we have been looking at a range of expository texts in reading. We have enjoyed making many different kinds of connections to the texts, as we aim to get a better understanding of the information being presented. With Reconciliation week coming up, we have looked at a range of Indigenous Perspectives in our literacy lessons, and, of course, the connections we can form with them.
Maths
Over the past fortnight in Maths, we have focused on efficient mental and written strategies for Multiplication and Division. To support conversations at home, ask your child to regularly share their Maths goals and current PSTs they are working on in class. These can be easily located and shared through the Google Classroom platform.
To support your child's automatic recall of multiplication facts, we have included an engaging game - 'Multiplication Squares' for you to engage with your child at home!
Learning Intentions
Please have a look at what we are investigating and learning over the next fortnight.
