Year 5 and 6 Learning Moments

Year 6
Giant Bird Survey Data Collection Table
As part of Year 6 mathematic investigation into data collection and analysis, we have been conducting bird surveys. The students wanted to be accurate in the total abundance of each bird that they surveyed so they created a giant table with butchers’ paper and markers, worked out the total of each bird seen by the whole class then calculated averages. The averages where then put into a national bird survey database called Birdata to help with Birdlife Australia’s research of birds around Australia. This is an example of the wonderful hands-on mathematical tasks we are completing in year 6 to increase class cohesion, collaboration, understanding of complex mathematical concepts and help our local communities understanding of the birds that are in our area.
Year 5
Students in Year 5 have been engaged in lot of activities for term 1. The highlights for term 1 include conducting science experiments to understand the benefits of being created with opposable thumbs, and having Willow, the therapy dog, motivate and support our learning.
