Languages Week

Languages Week

The Languages Week is a week of cultural activities aiming to celebrate the multiculturalism at Doncaster Secondary College, raise students’ cultural awareness and improve their language skills.

This year’s Languages Week provided lots of fun activities for all students and teachers, such as face painting, pasta eating competition, dumplings and buns, cultural quiz, French crepe, pizza making, Italian movie watching, Chinese calligraphy, craft and games workshops and more!

We were very glad to see a lot of enthusiastic faces and we hope everyone has enjoyed themselves last week!

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

Language Week 2019 was a really big hit. From Italian day to French day to Chinese day everyone had a ball. Italian day was full of excitement from a free dress charity day which was awesome, then the gelati vans, which by the way was delicious and then the spaghetti eating competition which was hilarious. Then to conclude the amazing day all Year 7’s watch Aladdin in Italian. Thursday came with buzzing students. It was French day! Hot French crepes with a choice of topping which everyone seemed to love. The lines went on forever with students talking about what crepe to get. Then the Year 7 watched the ‘Cat In Paris’ which was in French. It was a super funny movie with the crowd rowing with laughter. Finally, the last day of language week, Chinese day. Hot Chinese food. Dumplings, fried rice and more delicious treats. All Chinese classes did Chinese activities in period 3. From calligraphy to paper cutting. It was so much fun. Then to end Chinese day and language week we watched a Chinese food documentary and finished with Kahoot. Language week was a great first experience and I can’t wait for next week.

I think that languages week was very good because of all the activities that there were. I have bought at least 1 thing at each stall and the food was very good. I liked how some of the periods were language related and we watched a couple of movies/films.

Languages Week was a great week. Languages Week is when people get introduced to different cultures. Whether it is through watching movies, eating food or doing lots of fun activities. I loved Languages Week because I get to learn more about different countries cultures, food, and traditions. I also bought at least one stuff in Languages Week; a plain vanilla ice-cream.

Language week 2019 was a smash! All the food was delicious, and the activities were really fun and interesting.

Italian Day 21st May: It was free-dress for charity and a nice way to start off Language Week. There was a spaghetti eating competition and gelati. As well as that, all the students studying Italian did Italian activities. At the end of the day, in period 4, we watched Aladdin in Italian. Of course, there were subtitles.

French Day 23rd May: Crepes were the thing being sold on this day. Yum! Again, all the students studying French did French activities. In period 4,  we all watched Cat in Paris, a French movie.

Chinese Day 24th May: This is the language I’m studying. There were lots of yummy Chinese foods. For our activities, we were either doing calligraphy and paper cutting, or Chinese games. I did the calligraphy and paper cutting. We learnt that people do a specific paper cutting when they are getting married. That is the character we made. At the end of the day, we watched a Chinese documentary (with subtitles) on food and once it finished, we did a Kahoot. I’m sure next year’s Yr. 7s will enjoy it as much as everyone did this year.

Italian Day

This year was the 36th Annual DSC Spaghetti Eating Competition.

Due to the overwhelming number of students and staff supporting this event we were able to offer 3 heats for the first time since its inception!

In round one we saw reigning champion Christian K. 8H successfully defend his title with Charlie C. 7J coming in a close second.

Round two it was Tom S. 11C who came away victorious. And in what can only be described as a grotesque exhibition, Mr Gardner and Mr Fry “won” in what some might call a questionable display of sportsmanship!

Thank you to all staff and students who assisted on what was a truly successful day.

Mille Grazie a tutti!
