International Students

Working with the IT department at the College

International student Will HUANG is very excited about his first job in Australia! He has recently been trained to work as an assistant within the IT Department at the College. Will has answered some questions about his experience so far

How did you find out about the IT job opportunity?

The International Student Program pointed me in the right direction toward the opportunity in DSC IT department, as Ms HUANG knew I was very interested in IT.

Why would you like to work in IT?

One day I would really like to work in IT. I think this is a great opportunity to really lay a foundation for my future career. My mum is also very supportive of my choice to work casually while I am studying.

What did you learn from your training?

I learned lots of things from my mentor. Some of these things included; fixing computers, changing computer parts, and computer maintenance. My mentor, Mr Tang,  who is also a past student at DSC has shown me how to do things to a high standard and has supported me so that I am able to do my job well.

And what would you say to other students thinking about working?

It's great. I really enjoy the working environment. Everyone is really supportive and helpful. They always answer my questions.

What do you enjoy the most from this job?

My favourite part is the computer maintenance - it's the most enjoyable for me. Of course, earning money and being independent makes me feel really great!

Languages Week

During the College's language week, our lovely International Students a variety of activities were available to participate in, such as:

  • Charity free dress day
  • Italian film watching
  • Spaghetti eating competition
  • Music band performance
  • Lunchtime food stalls

On Chinese Day, a music band of four enthusiastic Year 12 International Students performed several songs to their peers. I was extremely proud to see so many of them get involved in these events and be the part of the school community.

STUDENT REFLECTION

The students reflected on the activities they participated in throughout the week and wich aspects of Languages Week they enjoyed most.

During Languages Week, our Mandarin teacher arranged a mini table tennis match for students who had finished their work in class.  I tried not to be distracted by others and finished my work as fast as possible, that way I could get a chance to play table tennis in class with my classmates and teacher. I wore a white, floral ‘qipao’ (Chinese traditional dress) for the student free dress day. I enjoyed watching the performance by the International Student music band, I also enjoyed watching spaghetti eating competition and sharing food with my friends.

I watched an Italian movie with my friends and that’s fun! I enjoyed a lot in Language Week and I had so much fun. The activities I enjoyed the most was the free dress day and tasting food from different countries.

For the student free dress day, I wore the traditional clothes of the Chinese Minguo Period. This beautiful outfit is dotted with a circle of flowers around the collar, sleeves and bottom. I was very pride that I could wear clothes with my own national style at school.

I really enjoyed Languages Week. It was so wonderful to connect and experience so many different cultures.

The thing I enjoyed the most about Languages Week was definitely eating the crepes.

VCE Information Session

Last week, the year 12 International Students attended a VCE information session which helped them better understand how VCE works. During the session, the presenter highlighted the VTAC offer key dates and explained what the students need to pay particular attention to. We also found out that International Students will be automatically considered for scholarships in many institutions.
