VCAA Plain English Speaking Competition

On Wednesday, 22 May, I had the privilege to see two of our year twelve students – Tiffany Papagiannopoulos and school captain Keishan Hunkar compete in the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s ‘Plain English Speaking Competition’ which saw students come from a diverse range of independent, Catholic and government schools. For the competition, students gave two speeches, one they had developed and prepared themselves, the other an impromptu speech with only four minutes of preparation time. Every contestant presented with excellence and confidence, I want to especially commend the efforts of Tiffany and Keishan for their diligence in the competition and representing DSC and displaying our college values. A truly amazing effort!

Systems Engineering

The college has added Systems Engineering as a new subject to VCE this year starting with Year 11 Units 1&2. The students have studied different aspects of mechanical engineering and modern methods of production including CNC cutting. The students used this knowledge to tackle their first design brief, building a fully functioning crane. They had to use only renewable resources or recycled material which added to the challenge. They spent over four weeks designing, prototyping and constructing their cranes and in the end, they had to subject their cranes to a series of repeated weight lifts to check their usability. Each group successfully completed this challenge and the students enjoyed the challenge of applying their knowledge to a production piece. These students are now looking forward to tackling their next area of study electrical engineering.
