Kings Park Campus Principal Message

As I write this report in early September, I’m wondering when will we start seeing some real spring weather…hopefully not too long. We seem to be accelerating faster and faster toward December every year and this year is no different. Term 3 has provided us with many opportunities to immerse ourselves in the exciting and chaotic life of a secondary school community and given us little time to reflect; which may be why we just haven’t realised that we are almost at the end of the term. A snapshot of our term includes:

Fuji JHS visit

Our intercontinental relationship has existed for over 20 years now. This year, 5 students and one staff member from the Kings Park campus hosted our Japanese visitors. Unfortunately, their stay was just not long enough, but it was enough to create some new friendships and embed the connection to all things Japan and Japanese. After 5 days, we farewelled our Fuji visitors here at the Kings Park campus on Monday August 19

Year 8 High Resolves

This program has now been a staple of our Year 8 civics and citizenship program. Trained facilitators took our students through learnings and activities that focused on Just Society with a view to preparing them for the rigours and the experiences they will encounter when they leave Copperfield College as local and global citizens

Science Fair

This initiative is now in its 4th year and is only getting bigger. Congratulations to all the teams from Kings Park who presented their perspective on this year’s theme, ‘Space’ in the Sydenham campus gymnasium on Friday August 23. Also, big thanks to Mr Hofman and Ms Miller for preparing our students

Student Led Presentations/Interim Reports Another well-established routine at Copperfield College is our Student Led Presentation day. It empowers students to showcase and reflect on their learning over the year. Some of the presentations we saw were just jaw dropping, no doubt our parents/carers would’ve been most proud. Of course, the presentation not only forms part of the English CAT but also serves as a component of the Term 3 Interim reports which will be available to parents on Compass at the end of the term.

Tasmania camp

Approximately 16 Year 10 students and two staff form the Kings Park campus will join up with Sydenham to attend the 4-night camp to Tasmania in the last week. We wish them a safe trip, and just as much, we hope that the educational and social benefits are long lasting

Pathways news – We are also right in the middle of subject selections for 2020; both for our current Year 9 students with elective choices and our current Year 10 students who are preparing to embark on their chosen VCE/VET/VCAL program at the Delahey campus next year. It is also a timely reminder that student pathway and careers is a three-way partnership between the school, the student and the parent/carer. It is critical that we work together to provide our current Year 10s with the best support and advice that we can. On a side note, our Year 10 Advance class chose to create a mini Year 9 into 10 expo for our current Year 9 students. Supported by their teacher, Ms Tauber, the class ran an exhibition and information session on Tuesday August 13. The session was incredibly well received by students and staff, once again shining the spotlight on student agency and voice. Well done to all!

Year 8 into 9 Art/Technology expo

Monday September 9, our Year 8 students will also be given an opportunity to explore the different electives in the Art & Technology Learning areas. Students will first be taken through a general presentation of what is on offer and how to complete the selection form. This will be followed by the actual expo in our Old Drama Space where the previous presentation comes to life a bit more with displays etc.

Year 10 Wellbeing Day

This Friday, September 13, all Year 10 students will engage in this annual event. Students will be taken through a series of presentations around domestic violence, Party Safe, body image and the violence associated with gangs and community hotspots.

NAPLAN results

NAPLAN results have arrived. Ms. Katherine Gray is currently preparing congratulatory letters to students whose relative growth from Year 7 to Year 9 was assessed as high. Ms. Gray has also sent results to all our feeder primary schools so that they get a snapshot of the growth of their previous students from Year 5 to Year 7. We have received so many emails from the primary school principals who have thanked us for providing them with data that informs their future practices

Digital Thumbprint

This is a program on cyber safety and security to support our Year 7 and Year 9 students as responsible users of technology in the 21st century. Thank you to Mr McLeod and the e-learning team for their organisation of this worthwhile and necessary learning experience

Morrisby Pathways

Year 9 students who completed the Morrisby Pathways test last term have now been scheduled for a 30-minute interview with an external consultant to review their Morrisby results. The interviews are taking place on Monday September 9 and Tuesday September 10

Campus Assembly

The campus will come together to celebrate and showcase all that has been achieved by the extraordinary students here at Kings Park. They are incredibly uplifting experiences and really provide an opportunity for us all to stop and reflect on how our student cohort is growing, maturing and progressing in all areas, not just in student academic achievement.

PAT testing

Year 10 PATM and PATR testing is occurring this week. The PAT testing is a necessary and invaluable tool that provides diagnostic data for teachers at Delahey to better serve the individual and cohort needs of our next generation of VCE/VET/VCAL students.

Phew…that’s one big list of campus events/rituals. All of the above could not happen without the committed attitude of all our staff here at the Kings Park campus, both teaching and non-teaching. Ms Chiodo and I would like to take the time to thank them all publicly. We would also like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a smooth end of term and some quality time with families during the September/October break. Bye for now.
