The WWII in Cairns Interactive History Workshop

The WWII in Cairns Interactive History Workshop held in the St Mary's  Library on Thursday 27th February.  We had two guest speakers from the Cairns Museum and learned about World War II.

The Year 10 History classes attended an interactive workshop held in the library.

There were two special guest speakers from the Cairns Museum, Jim and Belinda. The classes learned about how World War Two affected the Far North Queensland region, and the rest of Australia. The class then moved onto analysing a newspaper extract from The Cairns Post. After the classes looked at a map of WWII sites in Far North Queensland/Atherton Tablelands region and marked key areas such as Rocky Creek Hospital in Tolga in which 30,000 patients were treated. Lastly, the classes worked on a map of SE Asia and Pacific WWII sites.

The Year 10 History classes went to the library to participate in an interactive World War II workshop that consisted of two guest speakers from the Cairns Museum, an old history article from the Cairns Post and Pacific Oceania map of active locations in the World War II. 2 These activities helped the Year 10s to have a comprehensive understanding of how World War 2 affected the local area of Far North Queensland.

The Year 10 History classes went to the library to listen to Belinda and Jim from the Cairns Museum as they did a presentation on WWII in Cairns. While they were giving us the presentation we were taking notes as they were speaking as a helping hand for our assignment. After the presentation we finished the worksheet in our own time. They had given us this presentation to help us with our assignment which is based on WWII.

In the Interactive Workshop on WWII Local impact students of Year 10 History were able to extend their knowledge on WWll. This involved doing various activities that showed us more about WW ll. The three main activities were reading authentic articles from eye witnesses to the time during the war, analysing maps of important places during the war as well as an excellent educational presentation from the Cairns Museum. The students of St Mary’s were very grateful to have such educated people come in to talk to us about events that happened during the war which impacted so much on Cairns and the north of Queensland during WWII.

On Thursday 27th, Cairns History Museum personnel visited our College. These historians helped us recognise the significant events of World War II and the effect this overpowering event had on our local economy and geography in Cairns during the 1940's. This knowledge helped us extend our point of view on the war and how Australia had to become adaptive to vastly changed circumstances during the war. In Task 1, our class had to read a few news bulletins on the war from some local’s perspectives and Task 2 had us reviewing our knowledge of geography and where the actions in the war were located. Task 3 was a large informative session with the historians from our Cairns Museum of History. These historians explained to us, in depth, why we need to remember these events, what devastating effect it inflicted on our country and how local people had to adapted to this change. During WWII Cairns was one large military base and the effects of this can be viewed all over our region.

The interactive activity by Jim and Belinda was a very helpful tool that assisted students towards their World War Two assignment. We learnt a lot of interesting unknown facts about the war especially that the Japanese military forces dropped more bombs on Darwin than Pearl Harbour.
