Kendo demonstration
A busy Term 3 of sport has now been completed with Year 7, 8 and Intermediate teams in Basketball, Hockey and Table Tennis competing in regional competitions. Congratulations to the following successful teams who will now go onto WMR finals early in Term 4: Year 7 Boys, Year 8 Girls & Boys and Intermediate Boys Hockey, Year 7 Girls and Year 8 Boys Basketball and Year 8 Girls Table Tennis.Earlier this term, our girls kept the flag flying with 5 successful teams competing in Western Metropolitan Regional finals. They were Year 7 & 8 Girls Soccer, Year 7 and Intermediate Netball and Intermediate Girls Footy.
As part of inter-cultural week celebrations held earlier this term we had a demonstration of Kendo at lunchtime in the gym. Kendo is the ancient Japanese martial art of bamboo stick fighting and many of our students enjoyed the opportunity to give it a go. We are fortunate to have a local Kendo club situated nearby at Victoria University. Beginner courses are starting up soon. Contact sensei@vukendo.org for further details.
It never fails to amaze me to hear of the un-heralded sporting talent we have within our school cohort. There are many students who go about their business after school and on weekends competing brilliantly in a wide variety of sports some popular and some less known. One example of this is one of our Year 10 students – Jakob Howard – who recently competed in the Australian Indoor Rock Climbing championships in Sydney (see photo). Given the increased amount of time being spent in front of a screen, the Footscray City College Health/PE & Sport faculty would like to remind all students and parents of the importance of regular physical activity outside of school hours. The National guidelines state that for secondary students 3 hours/week of moderate to vigorous activity should be the absolute minimum so let’s do it!
