LIBRARY NEWS

From the library..
Did you know that here at the HTS library we do more than just read great books? I was lucky enough to have a parent call in last week to return some books and they were surprised to find so many people using our space.
Apart from every Primary class from Kindergarten to Year 6 coming in for a lesson each week, Secondary classes and students regularly come to research, use the library’s technology, print assignments or to borrow videos and teaching resources. During breaks we host students playing chess or other board games, drawing, colouring, reading, completing homework and even relaxing! Students are able to access assignment help and we are happy to proof-read and assist with research when required. It certainly keeps us busy and we love it!
This Week’s Reads - we have taken a small mini-break from the Jackie French books we are reading to enjoy some books related to a Halloween theme. We are learning about the origins of this event as All Saints Day, which has surprised quite a few students, and enjoying ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. This book, written by ‘The Gruffalo’ author, is is a beautiful story of kindness about a witch who likes to helps animals and makes room for them on her broom. Children are designing a new broom and drawing all the special things they would make room for if they had a flying broom. Older students are looking at another well known author, R.L. Stine of Goosebumps fame, and how he creates suspense in his stories. We will be investigating ‘spooky’ vocabulary and enjoying a short story from one of his books also. Next week, back to Jackie!
Term 4 Scholastic Book Club - Yesterday, the latest Scholastic Book Club was distributed to all classes and orders close TUESDAY, 6TH NOVEMBER 2018 (week 4). There are some excellent books in this term’s edition and they are ideal gifts for those organised enough to be thinking about Christmas already! Where possible, we ask that families take advantage of the online LOOP ordering system as this streamlines the ordering process and orders arrive earlier. If you prefer to send in money and an order with your child, please ensure that you have the correct money as we cannot offer change. We appreciate your support of this program as the library is able to purchase more books for your children with the rewards Scholastic offers us.

New Books - last week we were lucky to receive more Scholastic Standing Order books from the CSO, so we have been busy cataloguing and covering them to get them out on the shelves ready to go. Please keep an eye on the New Releases stand for these titles.
Last, but Not Least - did you guess which class borrows the most books during library lessons? If it was 3/4C then you would be correct. Thanks to Mrs Dolbel and Miss Dal Santo, 3/4C love to read great books, particularly the Tom Gates, Bad Guys, Weirdo and Guardians of Ga’Hoole series. Keep it up!
Happy reading and have a great week,
Mrs Toni Fraser
