EXCEL Sports Program

2018 Junior Netball Schools Championship

The Year 7 and 8 EXCEL Sport classes entered six teams in the 2018 Junior Netball Schools Championships at the State Netball and Hockey Centre where  schools from all over Melbourne competed in this gala event.  After 36 games of netball the students were exhausted but rapidly improved their netball skills and tactical awareness throughout the day. We also had five students and a parent volunteer their time to umpire the games at the championships. Thank you to Taylor Grimmer, Ashleigh O’Brien, Lauren Terlicher, Tanya Sheehan, Emily Terlicher and Andrew Love who had equally busy days umpiring and ensuring this event could occur. Thank you also to the amazing staff that coached and supported our six teams, Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Brand and Ms. Cavey.

Beast Gym Boxing and Sparring Unit

The Year 9 EXCEL Sport students went to Beast Gym in Chelsea Heights for four weeks. The students were taught Muay Thai boxing and kicking techniques, self-defence and overall fitness. The unit culminated in a sparring session with a professional fighter, Kate, who put the class through their paces.  Thank you to Graham at Beast Gym for passing on his knowledge and expertise.

Exercise Physiology

On Friday 22nd June the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class went to the Sports Injury Clinic in Frankston to participate in a running assessment. This session was conducted by four trained exercise physiologists that ran the students through a series of core and functional strength exercises to assist in efficient movement. The students were also observed running on a treadmill to help identify any technique deficiencies. It was a worthwhile experience for the students to understand the training and preparation that elite athletes undergo to perform at the highest level.

Junior Basketball Victorian College Championships

The EXCEL Sport Program entered three teams in the Victorian College Championships at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna. Our Year 7 and 8 students competed extremely well throughout the day and progressively improved in team offense and defence. It was a pleasure watching our ball movement in transition and the teams working cohesively. We narrowly missed playing finals but represented the College with distinction throughout the day. Thank you to Mr. Wakefield for your assistance.
