Hands On Learning

The first semester of Hands On Learning (HOL) was a steep learning curve for the students as well as myself.

We utilized this time of familization by making a home for HOL in R5 where the students feel safe in a place to call their own.  We have managed to source a second-hand kitchen that the students were able to refit to make a fully functioning workspace.

To celebrate the completion of the kitchen, the students cooked a 3 course meal that included a main course of Roast Pork which they shared amongst themselves and some invited guests.

Feel free to send any unwanted kitchen utensils or crockery our way!

Metropolitan Partnership Youth Forum

On 7th May 2018 Georgia, Callum & Alex represented Patterson River Secondary College at the Metropolitan Partnership Youth Forum organised by The Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning held at the State Library. 120 students and young people across the Metropolitan areas discussed topics such as Melbourne’s liveability including transport, education, youth engagement, housing, health and water. We were able to identify specific challenges we face as young people in the Southern area such as life skills, housing and access to mental health services. A storyboard artist as pictured captured our thoughts.

The Youth Forum was a great opportunity to have our voices heard by government through the partnership representing the Southern community.

FMP Action Group Network Meeting

On Monday 23rd of July, the PRSC RESPECT Group hosted the Frankston Mornington Peninsula (FMP) LGBTIQ Action Group Network Meeting. Ten LGBTI community members from organisations such as Headspace, Victoria Police, LGBTI Elder, Reach Out, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Youth Service came to the meeting. Students shared their efforts in celebrating IDAHOBIT Day earlier this year and ongoing work to support and create awareness for our Rainbow Community.

Next awareness day will be Wear It Purple Day in August.

The Kingston Koorie Mob

During the last week of term, our students who are part of the Kingston Koorie Mob were invited to attend the meeting place at Mentone Lifesaving Club.

Ben Shewry from Attica (the top restaurant in Australasia and 7th in the world), cooked for the Koorie Mob utilizing native Australian Ingredients.

The meal started with a wattle seed miso soup and was followed by kangaroo with finger limes on a salt bush nest.

After lunch, Ben shared his story with the Mob, of how he was able to achieve great success as a chef and restaurateur.
