Japanese Children’s Day Celebrations 2023

In recognition of our longstanding sister city relationship with Yaizu, Japan, Hobart City celebrate Japanese Children’s Day each year.

Their relationship with Yaizu is founded on strong people to people links, cultural connections and shared values, particularly around children and education.

One of the ways Hobart celebrates the relationship is by holding Japanese Children’s Day celebrations each year. Children’s Day is a national holiday in Japan where the community’s aspirations for its children to be strong and resilient are highlighted.

Traditionally, to mark this occasion, City of Hobart’s activities have been concentrated around the Japanese Garden within the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (RTBG). Carp-shaped streamers (koinobori) are displayed in the trees. This year however, there will be a range of activities running across the celebration period at other locations around the city including at Youth Arc and Wellington Court in the CBD.
