Secondary Cricket Finals

Last Thursday, finals were held for our Cricket teams, with the Year 9 Gold team earning a place in the Grand Final against Sacred Heart.  Mount Carmel lost the toss and were sent into bat. The team put on a steady flow of runs and only lost 3 wickets, in a format that gives 4 runs to the opposition for every wicket.  The team scored 66 runs, with top scorers Anna Costelloe, Zoe Wilkinson and Jenny Bangu-Ujang. In the second innings, the bowling was fitting for a final; accurate and challenging for their opponents to hit. Frankie Ciccia was the pick of the bowlers with 2/10, with Anna Costelloe and Phoebe Gatehouse also securing a wicket. The match came down to the final over, with Sacred Heart eventually winning 4/97 to 3/86.

The Year 7/8 team were in a playoff for 5th against Fahan. In another close game, Fahan took away the win, but the team have enjoyed some success along the way this season, and showed improvement in batting, bowling and fielding. Thanks to Louise Ims and James Fielding for their time managing, coaching, scoring and umpiring.

Volleyball

The Secondary Volleyball roster concluded on Monday afternoon, with cross over / final matches for all teams in both competitions.   In the Year 9 – 12 rosters, both Mount Carmel teams finished in 7th position, so were drawn to play each other, providing an exciting local derby finish to the season.  As it was free clothes day, the teams were in a variety of outfits, but it didn’t deter their ability to pull out the brilliant skills when required.  The Gold team looked to have the upper hand, winning the first set 25 – 21, but brilliant serving by Ava Smith had the Navy team back in the game with a 25 – 15 win in the second set.  The final set was won by Navy 15 – 6, giving Navy bragging rights.

The Year 7 and 8 teams headed to Mackillop for their final matches.  Year 7 Gold were playing Dominic for 7th spot and Year 8 Navy were up against Mackillop for 3rd place.  As you would hope for finals, both teams had close, exciting 3 set encounters, with Mount Carmel victorious in both matches.

“The team rapidly improved over the course of the term and while there is opportunity to refine many skills of the sport, the effort was great and there were many more rallies over the net by the end of the term and a higher percentage of serves in.  Everyone showed great sportsmanship and they celebrated the little wins of individuals, there was support for all of their team mates and plenty of high fives and cheers when someone had their moment.”

Year 7 Gold Coach, Adam Williams

Soccer Premiers

Mount Carmel was represented in the SSATIS Year 9/10 Soccer roster this season, with a team of Year 8 and 9 students.  The team finished top of the ladder of 10 teams and conceded only one goal for the season.  Last night they played off in the Grand Final, against The Friends School, in a Gala at Warrior Park, following the Year 7/8 Grand Final.

The team showed amazing skills, team work and effort during the match, steadily increasing their lead as the match went on. It was an exciting night, with the team cheered on by other students and spectators.  Mount Carmel came away with a 4 – 0 victory, and are looking forward to being able to represent the College again in this age group next year.

Congratulations on the season to Year 9 students, Rakaia Arahanga, Esther Dance, Zali Elliott, Lola Gillard, Sophia Khan, Hannah Mahmoud, Lucy Mauafu, Ashlan Ryan, Eva Sommerville and Year 8 students,  Addison Broadbent, Ines Gadon, Sadie Rogers and Bridget Siedentopf, and their Coach, Muhammed Khan.

Year 5/6 JSSATIS Football Gala Afternoon

Earlier in the month, five students from Year 5 and 6, including Leila Griffiths, Grace Nosworthy, Alex Varveris, Sophie Haremza and Lavinia Ciccia represented Mount Carmel in the JSSATIS Australian Rules Football Gala Afternoon at Dominic College.  This event is a taster for football in primary school, before students are able to participate in a full SSATIS roster in secondary school.  Whilst numbers prevented Mount Carmel from having its own team, it was wonderful that our students didn’t have to miss out, through a partnership with St Mary’s College. The combined team played teams from Dominic College, Sacred Heart College, Corpus Christi and Collegiate.  Whilst many were playing football for the first time, Coach, Craig Haremza was able to balance the team, so they started to combine well and adapt quickly to the game.  The players had lots of fun and hopefully will be back for more footy next year.

STCPSSA Swimming Carnival
