Visual Arts

This term the 5/6 students have begun a unit of work on the French master Claude Monet.

We viewed some of his famous water lily paintings and discussed the term ‘Impressionist’.

Paint was scraped horizontally across paper to give the impression of reflections on a pond.

The students then created a lily pad and lotus flower stencil, which was painted using the same colours but using a stippling method.

This term the 3/4 students are looking at the theme of ‘water’.

Our first artwork was the painting ‘Sydney’, which was created by Australian artist Ken Done.

After viewing the work and considering it’s purpose (the students thought that Ken wanted to show everyone how beautiful Sydney is), the students used it as an inspiration for their own t-shirt design.

Students in the 1/2 area are starting a unit of work based on the Spanish artist Juan Miro.

We have looked at a range of his paintings and identified recurring symbols that he used to create unusual creatures and scenes.

The students played a game called ‘Roll a Miro’ where they used a selection of the symbols to create their own critter.

Students in Foundation have started the term by looking at the Australian artist Howard Arkley.

They have identified examples of lines, patterns, colours and shapes in his airbrushed works of suburbia

The students have started by drawing a series of houses and considering different shaped houses. The next step is to add colour, something that the Foundation students think Arkley used to make his work happy and fun!
