Future STEM Leaders with RMIT University

Our year 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to participate in the STEM Future Leaders Program with the Women in STEM group at RMIT University. On Tuesday 23rd May, our students travelled to RMIT University in the city for the first part of this multiple touch point program and worked with students from other schools, as well as current RMIT students who are Women in STEM ambassadors.

Our students participated in activities to develop the growth of their leadership skills and engaged with role models from the university and industry. Our students benefited from hearing about the pathways of the ambassadors’ careers and what a week in their working lives encompasses. They heard from women working in STEM fields who are studying and working in careers in companies such as Canva, Eastlink and tertiary institutions. They also learnt more about other Australian women who are leaders in their respective STEM fields and the journey involved in them achieving their careers and success.

Finally, our students worked collaboratively and had a bit of fun, developing a 2 person reaction game by writing block-based coding blocks and programming Micro:bits. It was impressive to see our students representing our Sunbury College values as they immersed themselves in this unique learning experience.

Thank you to the Women in STEM group at RMIT University for this opportunity. We look forward to sharing the learning our students achieved by developing links with our local primary schools through the rest of the program and into the future.
