Lisa Wills- Celebrating 40 years of Teaching service

On behalf of the school community, I would like to congratulate Lisa Wills on 40 years of teaching service. Lisa received her service recognition award from The Hon. Natalie Hutchins MP, Minister for Education and Minister for Women and Jenny Atta, Secretary, Department of Education, in a ceremony on Sunday 21 May in Melbourne. The ceremony recognised staff who have dedicated their careers to education in Victoria.

Lisa is a master teacher who can scaffold students learning in textiles, so their creativity flourishes. She develops in her students a deep knowledge of the design process and supports them in producing amazing garments. I’m sure many students over many years have fond memories of our school’s annual Arts and Fashion Show, known as Show Off. The Fashion Parade within Show Off gives our textiles students the experience of a professional runway, complete with a catwalk, sound, and lighting, to showcase their work, thanks to Lisa and her dedication. Lisa is also an inspiring colleague. She is our Technology Instructional Leader and has an important role in supporting the teaching and learning practices across our school.

I asked Lisa to share how she has approached her teaching for the past 40 years and these were her responses-

  • a commitment to provide students opportunities for growth and success and new challenges
  • provide a friendly, supportive and inclusive classroom where relationships can grow and develop
  • consistency, resilience and passion for teaching my subject.

Year 10 Work Experience

Our year 10 students are going out on work experience from Monday 5 June to Friday 16 June.  I want to share my appreciation of our local community who are supporting our Year 10 work experience program. We have over 200 year 10 students who will go out to local businesses, as well as further afield. Work experience provides real world learning for our students, allows them to learn about potential careers and pathways and helps to inform their decision making as they pursue either VCE or VCE-Vocational Major over the next two years.

Many parents and carers have already played an important role in supporting their child by helping to facilitate a connection with a local employer.  A special mention to our local primary schools and childcare centers where a significant number of our students are placed this year. There are many young aspiring teachers currently walking our corridors at Sunbury College. Jane Cheeseman, our Work Experience Coordinator, has done a mountain of work to help prepare students for their visits, ensuring they have both a safe and engaging experience. Jane is supported by our VET, Careers and Pathways Leader Josh Pritchard and our Careers Councilor Cecilia Hoey.

I want to wish each of our year 10 students the very best during this time. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, bring your positive energy and ask lots of questions.

Best wishes

Craig O’Bree
