Learning at Joey's

Out and about in our classrooms

The Koala room have started the term with some great team work activities. They all came together to make some very delicious ANZAC biscuits in week 1.

All students and staff can attest to how good they tasted. Thank you.

The Koala room have also been busy practicing their ‘number bonds,’ ‘combinations to ten,’ or ‘rainbow numbers,’ off by heart. Kinders are learning the combinations to five. Practicing these at home will help greatly when using numbers to add and subtract. As the children become accurate recalling the combinations to 10, they will learn about combinations to 20 and 30!

Koala’s have begun homework this week. Recently the school purchased lovely new decodable readers that match the class’s Initialit lessons, so many of the students are bringing these books home. Koala student’s have some paper tasks too. All home readers have been selected carefully to match your childs reading needs; please help strengthen their reading by listening to the home readers being read daily and returning the homework folder to school on Friday’s with the other activities. You will be impressed with how well your son or daughter is learning to read, by using strategies learned in class.

RED is continuing in the Senior’s room this term. Students will receive their log sheets soon if they haven’t already. It’s OK to add PRC books to this.

May is the month of Mary. Mary the Mother of Jesus played an important role in the life of Jesus, as all mothers do, and thus the reason for Mother’s Day this month. Mr Wisemantels class have been praying a decade of the rosary each day. Koalas have joined the seniors class during this time.

All students are learning the ‘Brown Jug Polka,’ a heel toe bush dance. As you can see there's a lot of concentration and patience going on.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has arrived for 2023. The challenge requires children reading books (or being read to) from selected lists, logging them online with the PRC and receiving a completion certificate later in the year. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for pleasure in students and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Koala class will participate as a group and their challenge will be completed at school.

If your child expressed interested in participating in the 2023 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) they will have received a permission note to complete. All students from Kinder to Year 6 are to return their signed note to their class teacher to participate. Passwords will be provided once notes are returned.

More information about the challenge is available by visiting the PRC website:

https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

What to do Next?

For students who have returned their permission notes already, a password letter has been sent home. Any students who would still like to participate can join right up to the closing date in August. Permission notes are available from Mrs Koch.

When you receive your password information, you can log into the NSW PRC website at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

K-2 children read 30 books (these can be read to them) and years 3 - 9 read 20 books from lists available on the website. As these lists are over 100 pages long, I am unable to print these for families, so you will need to access these on the PRC website. As books are read, they are entered into the online student reading log. The challenge closes at midnight on Friday, 18th of August 2023.

If there are any difficulties for primary students logging books at home, Mrs Koch is able to assist at school.

ANZAC DAY March

We thank all students, families and teachers for their attendance and service at our ANZAC day march in Warialda. We had a great turn out and also had some fantastic representation in other towns such as Delungra, Bingara, Yetman and Barraba.
