Whats Happening In Our Grade

We are so happy to be back for Term 2 and have not wasted any time getting right back into the swing of things.

This week our students commemorated ANZAC day alongside the rest of the school with a memorial service. The students did a wonderful job creating our class wreaths and their individual poppies, they are to be commended for their efforts.

Mathematics

During term 1 in Mathematics, students were expanding their knowledge of 2 digit numbers. They are now ready to use a range of concrete materials to help them learn about addition and subtraction strategies. They will be using unifix blocks, number lines, and tens frames to support this learning. Students will work in pairs and small groups to encourage our emphasis of 100% participation, 100% of the time.

We will also be completing our unit of work on Location where students have had to give each other directions to find missing items around our classroom as well as draw simple maps.

Later this term our students will be introduced to the concept of length and being able to measure and compare how long or short an item is using informal measuring tools. Towards the end of the term their mathematics focus will shift to reading time to the half hour and becoming familiar with the features of an analogue clock.

English

In English students have wrapped up their learning on Response writing where students explored a variety of short films, writing pieces, pictures and favourite items. This term students have just begun learning about ‘Recounts. We have explored events and how we can use descriptive vocabulary to describe those events.  When reading, students have been working on identifying the structure of a recount, past tense verbs and time connectives in recount texts.

We will be continuing to extend our students phonemic and phonological awareness skills this term. Last term, students were introduced to the concept of long vowel sounds and different ways these sounds can be represented in written words. This term students will be learning about the following sounds (phonemes) /ar/, /or/, /ir/, /air/, /oo/, /le/ and /ow/.
