Since 2012, National Health & Physical Education Day has been the annual day on the calendar to raise awareness of and advocate for the value of HPE in Australian schools. The aim is to highlight the importance and impact on learning potential and wellbeing of all children, the benefit to all schools, and the valuable contribution to the wider community.

This year National HPE Day is celebrated on Thursday 12 September. Activities will be run throughout Week 8 here at Mazenod.

Basketball Report

In week 5 Mr Websdale and Mr Mason took five teams to compete in the SSWA Hills Division, Junior Basketball tournament. Mazenod entered two teams into the top division and three into the B team competition.

The top two teams won the majority of their fixtures in the A division, with the A team finishing as the second highest team to earn their place in the grand final and the B team finished high enough to play in the 3rd- 4th playoff game. Mazenod comprehensively won the grand final to become the Hills divison champions. Unfortunately the B team lost their game to finish in a commendable 4th place.

In the B division results were mixed, with Mazenod E being the pick of the teams remaining unbeaten through the group stage to earn a spot in the grand final. Another fine performance saw them crowned B division champions.

Well done to all participants and all year 10-12 students who accompanied the teams as coaches scorers and umpires. The A team now compete in the next round of the competition in week 7.

Baseball World Series

Remarkably, three Mazenod students were in the team, pictured above: (Left to right) Andrew Hurrelbrink, Trent Daniele and Ashton Hamilton.

From the July 27 – August 3, Andrew Hurrelbrink, Ashton Hamilton and myself attended the Senior League world series representing Australia. We left on 22 July arriving in America on the 23rd. When we got to our home for the next 2 weeks, Clemson University, we were given our uniforms. The next day we trained on the field that we would eventually play on. Later that week we attended the fan fest, were we got to meet all the other teams and our families who had come over. The next day we had our first game against Canada. We would eventually win that game by a score of 10-6 meaning we got to play Panama the next day. Panama were a very good team, beating us 6-1. We were faced with the best pitcher in the world which made the game hard. Because of this loss we had to play for the third day in a row, against Italy. Italy were also a very good pitching team, able to beat us 7-1. This eliminated us from the tournament allowing us to play a consolation game against East, an American team. This game was played a few days later allowing us to go shopping and go to baseball games with our families and friends. When we played East, we were 7-0 but the game had to be cancelled due to lightning. All in all, speaking on behalf of our team it was a once in a lifetime trip and we have made many friends and experiences that will last a life time.
