Senior Boys Hockey

What a great day it was for our Senior Hockey Team to play some hockey against John Monash at Waverley Hockey Club. It was perfect conditions for us to have a hit and see if we could get away with the chocolates, as when the first whistle went for the start of the game we were off to a bang.

It was a great first third as Aamir scored a birthday goal off a short corner, and a fabulous team effort to score another before the first break, leaving us 2-0 up. The next third was tougher, as John Monash started to run like there was no tomorrow meaning we hardly got the ball out of our defensive half but Noel, Sam, Dhilan and Blake were rocks at the back stopping every ball coming their way. This left Ricky in the goalie suit desperate for a touch. This defensive effort was worthy of a goal and that was exactly what we got x2, with two fabulous break-aways leaving us 4-0 up into the second break.

Desperate for motivation, we watch the girls play and learnt a thing or two (or maybe heaps) before the last third started. Despite John Monash still running like Road Runner, we made sure we played smart, not hard. Fabulous leading from Sam (different to the Sam mentioned before), Ryan and Ethan left us having countless opportunities up forward. Cade, Liam and Andy earnt the label of road blocks, clogging up the midfield and stopping the onslaught that could have been experienced if not contained.

It was yours truly who dived to hit the ball into the goal making me look 10x better than I am to leave the scoreboard at 5-0, and a lot on grazes on my legs and arms. Ricky decided that enough was enough and decided to go on a goalie run as he didn’t get a touch all game, getting through players with ease like Messi. Impressive with all that padding on that’s for sure, but his luck ran out half way up the pitch (or more like 10m away from goal) resulting in John Monash scoring, leaving the final result at 5-1. Fabulous Work Team. Pre-season for the next round begins now boys…

Senior Girls Badminton

The Monash Division senior badminton day was held at Monash University on May 7. Brentwood sent two teams to compete against our local schools.

The A team defeated Wellington A (5-1) and Wheelers Hill A (6-0), and lost to John Monash Science School (0-6). Brentwood finished 2nd in the pool games and played off against Wellington A in the semi finals and won (4-2). The A team again faced John Monash SS in the grand final and lost (1-5); although the girls did win one game off them this time. Final place – 2nd. Well done!

The B team played a full round robin and competed against each school twice. The girls defeated Wellington B (4-2), John Monash B (5-1), Wellington B (4-2), and lost to John Monash B (2-4) the second time they met. With the 3 wins and the games for and against, Brentwood’s B team won their division. Well done girls!

A Team – Rubika Rajamony, Wendy Huang, Monica Chen, Isabella Pang, Sophia Jing

B Team -Om Khamthun, Natalia Deng, Emily Lee, Beatrice Foong, Crysal Lim, Chloe San Jose

Thank you to Cynthia Mak and Richard Pham for coaching and motivating the teams throughout the day.

Intermediate Girls Tennis

Last Friday, the 24th of May, the Intermediate Girls Tennis team went on a road trip to Boroondara Tennis Centre for the 2019 State Finals. The team consisted of Klaire Elkin (Yr10), Jennifer Mcdonald (Yr10), Kiana Tango (Yr10), Cassidy Spotkaeff (Yr9) and Madison Lowe (Yr9).

Having breezed through the Monash Division earlier in the year, the girls found themselves in a nail biting finish against arguably one of the best teams in the state (and Brentwood sporting nemesis), Rowville Secondary College. Overcoming three nationally ranked players and some very intense coaching staff, the girls won the Eastern Region, winning both of their doubles matches to take the tie 4-2 on sets.

The State Final includes the winning Regional finalists from around Victoria and is a great day out for the students, allowing them to meet schools and students they might otherwise never have the opportunity to. The draw was split into two pools and unfortunately, potentially two of the top teams in Maribrynong Secondary College and Brentwood were matched together.

Following a brief morning rain delay, the girls cruised out onto the well drained courts 1 and 2 and began their State Campaign. The first match provided good, friendly competition, however it was over pretty quickly as Catherine McAuley College succumbed to a polished Brentwood. Some confusion as to whether Epping or University High should be in the finals resulted in neither turning up and providing a bye in our pool.

The third match against Maribrynong was always going to be tough, with a select entry sports program and a wealth of coaching staff at their disposal. However, the girls put up a well organised and positive tactical unit and beat them, 4 sets to 2, bringing with it joyous celebrations (from both the team and an extremely nervous Mr Shah).

Finishing top in their pool, the girls then went on to take apart Trinity College Colac in their semi final, whilst Maribrynong went on the have another close match, beating Macrobertson Girls High in the other semi. This brought the two teams together for a rematch of their fiery encounter earlier that day, with a sense that things would be a little bit tougher this time round - Maribrynong only seemed to be improving as the day went on, whilst all other teams started to tire from an already long and cold day and they had a look in their eye that suggested they were determined for revenge.

Sadly for the girls (and much to the detriment of Mr Shah's fingernails), they lost in the final, drawing even on sets 3-3, but losing by just 4 games aggregate for the match. Funnily enough, it was the Brentwood girls who looked over the moon with their achievements for the day, whilst their opposition didn't seem too thrilled with their State Championship, but that reflects the spirit and ethos that our girls brought to the game and their team.

It was an incredible effort and a huge achievement for all of the girls involved and for the school, as their teacher for the journey, I cannot express how proud I was of them. I'm sure many people will be closely watching what this group of players can achieve in their time at Brentwood. Congratulations again!! Runners up in the entire State!

AFL players visit Brentwood

This week Brentwood was lucky enough to host four AFL players from the Collingwood football club; Tyson Goldsack, Jamie Elliot, Flynn Appleby and Atu Bosenavulagi. The buzz around the school as the word spread about AFL players coming to Brentwood was electric. Students were on ‘look out’ to spot the players and get photos with these sporting stars.

The junior girls AFL team, the intermediate girls AFL team, sport captains and the VET: Sport and Rec students were able to attend a Q & A session with the players and then participate in a school run clinic.

The players all shared unique experiences about their path to AFL success, what it’s like to play AFL, recovery and training aspects of the game, interesting stories and inside information about the club. The Collingwood players all spoke honestly and inspired our AFL players and students.

During the clinic, the players were very approachable and shared tips and tricks to help students with their technique. They also posed for the all-important photos with many of our students and staff!

This was a great opportunity for our students that was made possible by the Collingwood football club.

Monash Division Cross Country

Brentwood competed at the Monash Division cross country last week at Norton’s Park and we were very fortunate with the weather; we had sunshine and blue skies. Our 20 boys and 16 boys competed in the first two races as they complete the longer race of 5km, whereas all girls and the 13/14/15 boys complete the 3km course.

We have many talented and dedicated runners at Brentwood and we as a school brought home many individual medals from each race. Congratulations to all students who represented Brentwood.

Thank you also to Ms Caminiti, Ms Warner, Ms Deb and the student teachers Tara, Hannah, and Sahar for making the day run so smoothly. Mrs Swilks, our Monash Division Coordinator, did a wonderful job with the organizing and the successful running of the interschool cross country.
