From the Librarian

This week we had three new books offered to the library and they are displayed for people to read. Two of these are class books from Year 1: one is a collection of original limericks and the other is an illustrated account of an Indigenous Dreamtime story with important messages for river safety.

Thank you, Miss Wrogemann, for having your creative students share their work with us.

The third book holds copies of shortlisted stories from the recent Mayors Short Story competition. Three of our students had their stories shortlisted and we congratulate Naomi Lock, Angelica Rivera and Tendai Hansen on their achievements.

This week the library space was used to host a visiting author who came to address English students from Years 7-10. Rosanne Hawke is a highly respected writer whose areas of interest include topics of faith and culture, relationships, displacement and belonging. She lectures in creative writing at Tabor College. We have about ten of her novels in our library including Zenna Dare which is used as a Class set for Year 10 students.

Students had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with published author, Rosanne Hawke. Rosanne showed us how she mindmaps her characters so that they write their own stories. She helped students consider the motivations and traits of their characters and then use them to determine what happens in the story. Rosanne talked about how she writes her novels, including the challenges she faces.

And although the time for submitting PRC forms has now closed, Mrs Fergusson and I both hope that children will maintain their reading habits and set themselves new goals for reading.

Premier's Reading Challenge

Well Premier’s Reading Challenge has finished for 2019! Well done to all students who completed their 12 books.

Now I have the task of entering everyone’s data on the Challenge website.

In the next Newsletter I will be able to report on the final number of students who completed this year’s Challenge, and if we broke our 2018 record.

Although the Challenge is over, and the holidays are approaching….DON’T stop reading!
