Secondary

Stage 4 Science - Mining and Resources

This term Stage 4 have been studying mining and the regulations and responsibilities mines have before, during and post mining. The students recently completed an activity where they had to "mine" choc chips from a biscuit while trying to conserve the biscuit/environment and not damage the area around the "mine".

Ms Moorby acted as the EPA agent and fined students if they contaminated the surrounding area.  This hampered the students ability to expand their mine and acquire more cookies to mine.

It was a great, engaging activity  and the students gained a lot of knowledge from this unit of work.

YEAR 7 GALLERY

7/8 Green Art have been looking at "zentangles" this term. Zentangles are line designs based on pattern.

Some of the students are still progressing on their designs in class and are hoping to have them finished for the end of term.

They are creating their designs on paper.  They have painted with watercolours first and also on white paper. Lastly, they will go onto doing designs on black paper with silver pens.

YEAR 9/10 VISUAL ARTS

This term 9/10 Visual Arts have been working on ceramic tiles, lino prints and clay containers on the theme of water.

The ceramic tiles were painted with acrylic paint then scratched back into (a technique called "sgraffito" in art and the word from which the word graffiti comes from) using a sharp tool to create a design. For the ceramic tiles the class concentrated on representing seashells, and some of the class also used stamping on their tiles.

The Peer Support Program promotes wellbeing, which encourages positive relationships, connectedness and a sense of responsibility.

Focus areas include:    • Orientation     •Resilience     • Values     • Anti-bullying

How does the Peer Support Program work?

Trained Peer Support Leaders, facilitate structured activities with groups of 8 -10 Year 7 students, supervised by Ms Hawkins. Briefing and debriefing sessions for Peer Leaders, by teachers, take place before and after each session. Sessions are conducted once a week for a term.

How can I support my child in their leadership role?

Discuss with your child the activities, asking questions about the concepts and understandings they are developing each week. This helps foster a positive connection between school and home.

At the end of the training, Year 10 students will be invited to apply for the position of Peer Support Leader for 2020, to assist and support Year 7 during their transition to High school.
