Preparing For Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent-teacher interviews are great for finding out more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development at school. You can also share information about your child.

Going to parent-teacher interviews shows your child that you’re interested in there learning and life at school.

You can prepare for interviews by thinking about what you want to discuss with the teacher, as well as any questions about your child’s progress.

Before the Interview:

  • Read your child’s report and have a discussion with them about the celebrations and challenges.
  • Prepare a few questions that will help guide discussions at the Parent Teacher Interview. Below are some examples:
    • What are my child’s interests and strengths?
    • What does my child struggle with?
    • How much homework should my child be doing every night?
    • What can I do at home to help my child with schoolwork?
    • What can you tell me about my child’s behaviour in class?
    • How is my child getting along with other students?
    • What support services are available for my child at this school?

During the Interview:

  • Be open and honest with the teacher.
  • Be understanding that a teacher’s perspective might be different to your child’s
  • Keep in mind that you and the teacher form a team around your child to support them in their learning. Being polite and positive is essential!
  • Include your child in the conversation.
  • Stick to the time frame. If you run out of time, your child’s teacher will ask you to organise another time to finish the conversation.
  • Create some goals and actions to follow up on over the holidays.

After the Interview:

  • Have a discussion with your child to see if they understand what was discussed.
  • Create a plan to follow through on any actions that were agreed on at the interview.
  • Commit to having regular discussions with your child about their actions and goals.
