Mass for the Assumption

On Friday 9 September, the Mentone Campus gathered for Mass to celebrate the feast called the Assumption of Mary; usually it is celebrated on 15 August, but this year we celebrated it a little later.

The feast celebrates Mary’s total sharing in the new life won by her son’s death and resurrection.  In the Gospel, we heard Mary’s song of praise for the wonderful things God had done for her by making her the mother of Jesus.

Mary’s life and death were a wonderful example of praise and thanks giving to God.

Overnight we had heard of the death of Queen Elizabeth, aged 96, she had been monarch for 70 years. As our Queen of State we recognised her many years of faithful service, with our flags flown at half-mast and special prayers for her. Like Mary, she was a woman of faith who responded to God’s call with a positive ‘YES”.

Father Peter Matheson was our celebrant and during his homily he highlighted the significance of the land and place in relation to Mary, Queen Elizabeth and our First Nations People.  I have attached this below should you like to consider his words.

Informal feedback from students suggested that the Mass was a special time to pray, to gather, and to listen to stories. A highlight was the singing led by Music Ministry. The prayerful Mass was made possible thanks to the generous sharing of time and talent by all who contributed, and the respectful participation of all students and staff.

Live Jesus in our hearts!

LUURNPA CATHOLIC SCHOOL - BALGO, WA

Luurnpa Catholic School is part of the Wirrimanu Community located in Balgo Hills, Western Australia – a remote community with vibrant Indigenous language and culture.

There has been a strong connection between St Bede’s College and Luurnpa Catholic School for many years with a number of Old Collegians serving as Lasallian Volunteers in the community. James Wills (2021) is currently volunteering and former staff member, Brother Rick Gaffney, is the Religious Education Coordinator.

Earlier this year, a very generous donation of football gear was made to Luurnpa Catholic School by St Peter’s Football Club through parent, Leanne Moser. This report was received from the school:

“In Balgo, AFL is something that gets all families particularly excited. Babies, small children and adults can be seen regularly moving about the community representing their teams. That’s why the recent gift of football shorts and socks from St Peter’s Football Club was so well received by students at Luurnpa Catholic School, Balgo – also part of the Lasallian network of schools.

The connection between St Bede’s College and Luurnpa Catholic School goes back many years with a number of brothers serving on the staff of both schools, alumni of St Bede’s College spending years working or volunteering in Balgo, plus immersion experiences for St James College Year 10 students who volunteered during their school holidays.

The Lasallian spirit continues to be strong in remote Western Australia and we look forward to continuing our relationship with St Bede’s College. On behalf of our grateful students, thank you to all concerned.”
